Physiotherapy
Our therapists offer exercise programmes to improve functional
ability and independence with advice and education for both
patients as well as their relatives and carers. We also offer
a unique approach to combat the side effects of surgical scarring
and radiotherapy especially following breast surgery.

Our
physiotherapy department is located in a purpose built facility
with state of the art equipment. Treatment and assessment is
available for both in-patients and out-patients. To find out

Cardiothoracic service
This growing service provides therapy
to individuals suffering predominantly from heart and/or lung
conditions which include:
- Pre- and post surgery for cardiac, abdominal and lung disorders
and transplants
- Mobility and exercise after heart attacks or diagnosed heart
conditions
- Weightloss and activity exercise before cardiac surgery
- Pneumonias and chest infections
- Asthma advice and treatment
- Breathing disco-ordination and hyperventilation syndrome
- Chronic lung disease such as emphysema, bronchiectasis and
pulmonary fibrosis
- General weakness from long term morbidity
- Cancers of the respiratory system
The goals of treatment are to:
- Increase general exercise tolerance after surgery
- Increase ventilation of the lungs after illness or surgery
- Aid in the clearance of secretions in the lungs
- Improve activities of daily living after surgery or
illness
- Reduce breathlessness through advice on breathing, exercise,
adaptations and energy saving advice
Musculoskeletal service
An outpatient service covering a range of conditions
including:
- back pain
- neck pain
- rehabilitation after surgery
- headaches
- sports injuries
- chronic pain.
Our goal is to help you understand and manage your condition and
to prevent recurrence.
Neurological and general rehabilitation service
Offered to patients suffering from:
- Spinal trauma and injury
- Stroke
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinsonism
- Head injuries
- Guillian barre
- Balance problems and dizziness
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Tumours of the brain and spinal cord
The physiotherapists are trained in a variety of techniques and
principles. These include:
- Bobath/normal movement
- Carr and Sheppard
- Gym work/ Swiss ball
- Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
- Electrotherapy/ functional electrical stimulation
- Vestibular rehabilitation

Rehabilitation often includes other
members of the multi-disciplinary team i.e. Occupational Therapists
and Speech and Language Therapists to ensure that the individual
receives a holistic approach to treatment.
Oncological service
Aims to reduce the side-effects of cancer and its treatments and
also to improve quality of life and independence. The service
includes assessment and patient focussed goal setting for all types
of cancer diagnosis.

Orthopaedic service
Offered to clients following:
- spinal surgery
- joint replacements
- arthroscopic knee repairs
- sports injuries
- trauma
- acute musculoskeletal pain management
and provides the following:
- Initial assessment of function, muscle power, joint range of
motion and a neurological assessment (for spinal
patients)
- Individual treatment, advice and education relating to
the orthopaedic/musculoskeletal condition
- Provision of appropriate equipment : walking aids, splints,
braces
- Tailor-made exercise programmes to regain normal movement,
function, strength and independence including gait and posture
re-education
- Liaision with the multi-disciplinary team i.e.
Consultant, Nursing Staff and Occupational Therapist to arrange
discharge planning and referral to Community Rehabilitation Team
and other support services if further input is required at
home
- Follow-up assessment and treatment as an Out-patient at Bupa
Cromwell Hospital to progress exercises and gait re-education, if
indicated
Paediatric service
Can help children with:
- Movement problems e.g. clumsy child syndrome, poor
coordination, slow to attain standing/walking milestones,
difficulty keeping up at school
- Developmental delays
- Neurological problems
- Orthopaedic injuries and fractures
- Post-surgery
- Soft tissue injuries e.g. ligament sprains, muscle tears,
torticollis, club foot
- Respiratory conditions
