Breast Surgery

Background to breast problems

Symptoms pertaining to the breast are common, and many women will need to attend a breast clinic at least once in their lives. With opportunities for breast screening, women may be asked to consult with a breast surgeon for further assessment of a mammogram finding.

Breast surgery has now become a subspecialty in its own right and breast specialists have at their disposal a variety of tests that accurately diagnose your condition to recommend conservative or operative management, and additional medical treatments that are necessary to achieve the best results.

The commonest condition for which women attend a breast clinic is the perception of a breast lump.  Many lumps on further assessment by a specialist turn out to be prominent areas of the breast or benign lumps that can be treated very simply, often without surgery.

All new breast lumps need to be assessed as some turn out to be cancer. Increased breast awareness and screening have enabled breast cancer to be picked up at an earlier stage, and this has contributed to the improved outcome following treatment of this condition.
