Genitourinary Medicine
Genitourinary Medicine is the medical
specialty which deals primarily with genital infections in men and
women, including chlamydia; genital warts; gonorrhoea; hepatitis a,
b & c; herpes; pelvic inflammatory disease and HIV.
Patients may be concerned about possible
exposure to sexually transmitted infections and risk of onward
transmission to others or development of long term complications.
They may be asymptomatic or present with a variety of symptoms
involving the genital area or more widespread complaints such as
abdominal pain or skin rashes.
Consultants manage patients with pain,
discomfort or discharge from the genital area and other problems
which affect sexual health. There are important links to other
specialties in particular Dermatology, Gynaecology and Urology.

consultations in this area are of a sensitive nature and patients
may be assured that every care will be taken to maintain

If you have any issues following sexual
assault, advice may be given in the first instance prior to any
intervention. Emergency Contraception can be issued if
appropriate.
In the event of HIV risk exposure by sexual
contact or through occupational hazard, immediate risk assessment,
medication known as PEP and advice can be given through this
clinic.
Quick results
it is recognised that these also need to be
made available as quickly as possible. Telephone, email and texting
of results are all possible with patient’s consent.
Recent developments
Newer diagnostic techniques have improved the
ease, range and reliability of many of the investigations. In
addition vaccines against human papilloma virus (HPV) have recently
been licensed and may protect against viruses, which cause cancer
as well as common genital warts.
