Oncology - Medical
Medical Oncology is the speciality relating to managing patients
with all forms of cancer using chemotherapy. More recently, it has
also come to include investigating patients at high risk of or with
the suspicion of cancer.
Cancer may be identified through screening programs, routine
investigations or after presenting with general symptoms such as
tiredness, weight loss, night sweats and lack of energy.
The delivery of comprehensive care for patients with cancer
requires a dedicated team of specialist doctors, nurses and
counsellors working together in the patients' best interest and has
many components.
We are now developing specialist teams of Doctors who work in a
multi-discplinary approach to manage often complex cancers such as
lymphoma in our newly designated Lymphoma Unit. The service
offers a comprehensive in-house service that will include a weekly
multi-discplinary meeting and access to state of the art therapies
such as radio-immunotherapy and targeted novel agents.
Over the last few years in particular, advances in modern
medicine mean that there are more successful treatment options
available with fewer side effects and that treatment may be often
delivered as an outpatient.
In addition to chemotherapy (anticancer drug treatment delivered
by medical oncologists and clinical oncologists) and radiotherapy
(delivered by clinical oncologists), supportive therapies both
medical and psychological mean that patients may receive care
tailor-made to their needs, both personal and cultural.
Bupa Cromwell Hospital has an international reputation for
delivering such care. With its’ extensive investigative, treatment,
information and supportive facilities world-class comprehensive
cancer care may be delivered within the one institution.
The Hospital also runs a unique programme called the Cancer
Recovery Programme. For further information on this and all
