Paediatric General Medicine

Paediatric General Medicine is the initial point of contact for child care after consultation with a GP. All aspects of child care are initially dealt with by the General Paediatrician.

The following conditions are just some examples of conditions commonly dealt with by the Paediatrician. In some cases the Paediatrician may want to refer your child to a tertiary specialist such as a Paediatric cardiologist or Paediatric Respirologist.

  • Acute Infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection meningitis etc
  • Allergic rhinitis / hay fever
  • Asthma
  • Bedwetting
  • Behavioural problems
  • Constipation
  • Croup
  • Diarrhoea
  • Eczema
  • Feeding problems in newborn babies
  • Fever of undetermined aetiology
  • Follow up and investigation of children with a urinary tract infection
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux
  • Headaches / Migraine
  • Heart murmur
  • Immune deficiency
  • Jaundice in newborn babies
  • Joint swelling
  • Kawasaki's disease
  • Poor weight gain

  • Uncomplicated primary epilepsy

The general Paediatrician is trained to be able to deal effectively and with sensitivity with most problems that your child may present with.

Above are some examples of conditions that are initially dealt with by the Paediatrician. In some cases, after an initial consultation the Consultant may well want to refer your child on for further tests such as CT or MRI scans, alternatively the Consultant may well want to refer your child to another Consultant for a further opinion. This can usually be arranged at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital.

At the Bupa Cromwell Hospital we are fortunate to have a very experienced team of Senior Paediatricians who provide a 24 hour on call service.

The 24 hour Consultant led service can be accessed by referral through your GP. Alternatively you can contact the Hospital directly by ringing 0207 460 5991. You should be aware that insurance companies usually require you to be referred by your GP.

After a referral is made the consultant will either ask you to come to the Outpatient Clinic or alternatively he/she may contact you to discuss the problem and make arrangements to meet.
