Paediatric Renal Medicine
Paediatric Renal Medicine embraces the diagnosis and management
of congenital and acquired renal disease in infants and children of
all ages. Specific conditions include:
- Structural abnormalities of the urinary tract in the newborn
infant
- Urinary tract infection
- Enuresis
- Haematuria
- Proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome
- Hypertension
- Metabolic conditions resulting in renal stone disease
- Acute renal failure
- Chronic renal failure
In paediatric nephrology Consultants work closely with an
experienced team of specialists in paediatric urology and renal
transplantation where many clinical problems require extensive
medical and surgical care.
Close liaison with clinical pathology and diagnostic imaging
optimises assessment and the support of dietetics provides a
comprehensive management service for children with chronic renal
failure.
Management of end stage renal failure is available.
Heamodialysis treatment is provided by paediatric trained nursing
staff. Renal transplant surgery for both the donor and recipient is
undertaken. Following surgery children are routinely admitted to
the intensive care unit for stabilisation prior to transfer to the
childrens ward.
