Gynaecology
Bupa Cromwell Hospital offers a full range of
gynaecological services including “well woman” screening. Many
women are part of a “well woman” program which is usually
undertaken on a yearly basis. The program includes a cervical smear
and pelvic examination to check for diseases of the ovaries
and breast examination. Additional tests are undertaken as
necessary.
The speciality of Gynaecology is divided into
several sub-specialties dealing with a range of disease specific to
women:
- Paediatric and adolescent gynaecology
- Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility - for medical and
surgical evaluation of women with problems related to the menstrual
cycle and fertility. For example, heavy and/or painful periods,
endometriosis, pre-menstrual syndrome and difficulty becoming
pregnant. Please note that although we do have many
Gynaecologists specialising in infertility, Bupa Cromwell
Hospital does not offer IVF treatment.
- Gynaecological Oncology - focusing on the medical and surgical
treatment of women with cancers of the reproductive organs
- Urogynaecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery - focusing on
the diagnosis and surgical treatment of women with urinary
incontinence and prolapse of the pelvic organs
- Family Planning
- Menopausal Gynaecology-focusing on menopause and hormone
replacement
Gynaecologists also deal with abnormal smears
and undertake a procedure called colposcopy to treat these.
In the past many women were offered a
hysterectomy to deal with a number of gynaecological problems.
Modern gynaecology has focused on developing treatments which try
to avoid hysterectomy and other major operations. These surgical
treatments are called “minimal access” or “key-hole” surgery
procedures which, whilst treating the condition, reduce the need
for long hospital stays and recovery.
