Clinical Expertise
Some of the country's leading specialists in neurology,
neurosurgery, neurophysiology, and neuro-rehabilitation work
closely together to provide a comprehensive, integrated
approach to patient care.
Our interventional neuro-radiologists play a key role in the
management of certain patients with coiling of aneurysms and
embolisation of arterio-venous malformations and vascular
tumours.
Spinal disorders such as spinal pain, spinal cord dysfunction
and scoliosis are managed by the neuroscience team in
conjunction with our specialist Orthopaedic Surgeons and
rehabilitation service within the Neuroscience Centre.
TIA Clinic and Strokes
Evidence suggests that stroke patients benefit from early
diagnosis, intervention and treatment in a specialist unit.
To facilitate this, Bupa Cromwell Hospital has a daily TIA
(transient ischaemic attack) and Stroke Clinic. There is ready
access to a full range of state of the art diagnostic facilities.
These include a spiral CT scanner, two high performance MRI
scanners, an ultrasound vascular imaging service and comprehensive
cardiac diagnostic facilities.
Neurosurgery
Surgery is performed by a team of internationally renowned
neurosurgeons. The
kind of surgeries routinely performed include:
Craniotomy
Craniotomies involves the surgical opening of the skull for
the purpose of gaining access to the brain. Craniotomies are
for the removal of benign and malignant tumours such
as acoustic neuromas, meningiomas and gliomas. A
craniotomy might also be used for the treatment of intra-cranial
aneurysms and arterio-venous malformations.
Transphenoidal hypophysectomy
Transphenoidal hypophysectomy involves the removal of
pituitary tumours utilising a nasal approach. Our endocrinology
specialists are closely involved in the management of this
condition.
Spinal surgery
Neurosurgeons routinely perform spinal surgery for conditions
such as: prolapsed intervertebral disc (slipped disc), spinal
tumours and abscesses. Spinal neurosurgery is also involved in
stabilising the spine by fusing the bones in the neck (cervical
fusion) or lumbar spine. Where appropriate our surgeons
utilise the latest microsurgical techniques.
Gamma Knife Surgery
The addition of the latest Gamma Knife Perfexion, has given a
new dimension to the treatment of brain and neck lesions and
arterio-venous malformations. With this revolutionary development,
treatment can be performed without opening the skull.

Cromwell Hospital Gamma Knife Centre we suggest you visit
our Gamma Knife website.
Neuro-rehabilitation
It is an essential part of the patient's journey to ensure
that they are given the support and guidance to get back to their
normal daily life as soon as possible.
The nursing staff on the neuroscience wards are specially
trained in the care of neurosurgical patients so patients are given
the best possible nursing care both before and after
surgery.
Part of this care is appropriate and specialist
neuro-rehabilitation support. The Bupa Cromwell Therapy
Department has a highly skilled and dedicated neuro-rehabilitation
team with specialist staff including; physiotherapy,
occupational therapy and speech therapy.
All of our specialist staff work together as part of a
multi-disciplinary approach working in conjunction with the
neurosurgeons, neurologists and medical rehabilitation consultants
to acheive the best possible outcomes.
