Dr Carel le Roux MRCP PhD

Dr Le Roux graduated from medical school in Pretoria, South
Africa, and completed his postgraduate medical education
in the UK. He was a previous Wellcome Clinical Research Fellow and
has recently received a Clinician Scientist award from the
Department of Health to pursue his research as a Senior Lecturer at
Imperial College London. At the Bupa Cromwell Hospital he is the
medical lead for all our metabolic conditions in weight-loss
surgery (diabetes, hypertension and thyroid disorders).
He is currently recognised a being a world leader in metabolism
and weight-loss surgery and has lectured in eight different
countries this year alone.
He has made contributions in the field of human physiology and
elucidated underlying mechanisms of obesity in animal models. He
has also optimised new assays of key new hormones, implicated in
appetite control. He has studied hormones produced in the stomach
(ghrelin), pancreas, (pancreatic polypeptide - PP) and distal small
bowel (peptide YY - PYY), oxyntomodulin (OXN),
glucagon-like-peptide 1, known as GLP-1, to establish their roles
and mechanism of action in appetite control in obesity,
under-nutrition and after weight loss achieved with bariatric
surgery. He was recently awarded ASO Young Achiever 2007.
