Cluster headaches

 

(Cilliary, neuralgia, Horton's syndrome, histamine cephalgia and migrainous neuralgia)

 

Definition and Presentation

Pain occurring in one side of the face in clusters from several days to weeks. It then abates to recur after months or even years later. The pain is usually localised around the eye in the temple behind the ear and in the back of the jaw.

 

Diagnosis

By clinical history and symptoms.

 

Treatment

A number of drugs can be used. Gamma Knife surgery focused on the trigeminal nerve root has been used in a few cases refractory to drugs.
