Speech and language therapy

Speech and language therapists provide treatment, support and care for people who have difficulties with communication and/or swallowing.

About speech and language therapy

At Cromwell Hospital, our team of Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) provide specialist assessment and therapeutic advice for adults with communication problems and swallowing disorders.

The SLT works either independently with clients or as part of a multidisciplinary team (depending on what is needed), offering assessment and treatment, as well as advice and training to family members and carers.

As there are many possible causes of speech, language, and swallowing disorders, our SLTs support several clinical specialties. Examples of areas SLTs work in include Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), neurology, oncology, maxillofacial, respiratory, and gastroenterology, as well as others.

We welcome insured clients and self-pay referrals. Please note that all out-patients presenting with voice problems need to be seen by an ENT consultant before their first appointment with the SLT.

This service is for adults only. For paediatric services, please visit children's speech and language therapy.

Conditions we work with

We treat clients presenting with communication and/or swallowing problems undergoing treatment for:

  • Cancer – specifically head and neck, but other cancer clients may also be referred to SLT (e.g. breast cancer, brain metastases)
  • Neurological conditions, including stroke, motor neurone disease, and Parkinson’s disease
  • Critical care, including those with tracheostomies (on and off the ventilator).

The specialist areas SLT work with are:

  • Dysphasia – communication disorder (e.g. problems with understanding spoken words, problems with speaking, and problems with reading and/or writing skills)
  • Dysphonia – dysfunction of the larynx resulting in voice problems
  • Dysarthria – acquired speech difficulty where motor function of the articulators and respiratory muscles are affected
  • Dysphagia – difficulties with swallowing.
