Haemorrhoidectomy

A haemorrhoidectomy surgery is a procedure to remove haemorrhoids.

Who is suitable for a haemorrhoidectomy?

Patients who decide to undergo a haemorrhoidectomy usually do so because alternative treatment have not worked. These could vary from ointments, suppositories, or any procedures to shrink enlarged haemorrhoids.

What does a haemorrhoidectomy involve?

Haemorrhoidectomy surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes approximately 45 minutes.

Your surgeon will gently open your bottom using a retractor to have a look at the haemorrhoids. A medical device called a diathermy is then used to remove the haemorrhoidal tissue and any anal skin tags.

What can you do to prepare for a haemorrhoidectomy?

Before your procedure, your surgeon will discuss with you any preparations you’d need to make, as each patient case is different.

What is the recovery period?

The recovery period will depend on multiple factors, such as your age, fitness level and the procedure. Our dedicated recovery team of specialist nurses and physiotherapists will work with you closely after your operation to make sure you recover as quickly as possible.
