Prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement

A prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement is a procedure that removes a disc in the spine and replaces it with an artificial one. The procedure is designed to relieve nerve pain and compression within the spine.

About prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement

A prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement (cervical spine) is a procedure that removes a disc in the spine and replaces it with an artificial one.

The procedure is designed to relieve nerve pain and compression within the spine.

Patients with acute disc herniation or cervical spondylosis will often benefit from prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement.

During the procedure, the anterior cervical spine will be exposed via an incision. Your surgeon will remove the affected disc, and any other surrounding material required, and replace it with artificial disc prosthesis.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and so you won’t feel any pain during it. It usually takes around 90 minutes.

Your recovery may vary depending on your condition and the complexity of the surgery performed, however, most patients are able to resume light activities about eight weeks after surgery. Your surgeon will tailor your recovery plan to your needs and our dedicated physiotherapy team will work with you closely to ensure you recover as fully and as quickly as possible.

As nicotine has been shown to inhibit the ability of bone-growing cells, smoking can negatively impact your recovery from surgery. It is strongly advised to stop smoking at least two to three months before surgery.
