Carpal tunnel release surgery

Carpal tunnel release surgery helps correct or relieve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. The most common symptoms that patients experience include numbness, pain in their hand and tingling.

What happens during carpal tunnel release surgery?

The surgery takes approximately 20 mins. During the surgery, patients are usually under local or general anaesthetic.

The surgeon will make a small incision into your hand and cut the transverse ligament (located in your wrist), resulting in the pressure on the nerve which causes the pain to be released.

Patients who have carpal tunnel syndrome will be suitable for this surgery, which can greatly reduce the pain and numbness in their hands and/or fingers by relieving the pressure on the nerves in the wrist.

The recovery period for this surgery depends on multiple factors which your consultant will discuss with you. However, it is a short procedure and most patients will be able to go home the same day.
