(Inguinal) Hernia Repair
Hernia repair surgery helps to mend an inguinal hernia by placing a mesh to strengthen the surrounding tissue and prevent the hernia from coming back.
What does a Hernia repair involve?
Inguinal hernia repair can be carried out using keyhole surgery (laparoscopic or robotic) or open surgery. Both types are usually done under a general anaesthetic, although open surgery can sometimes be performed using a local anaesthetic. The operation usually takes 30 to 45 minutes and is most often done as a day case (meaning you can go home the same day).
During keyhole surgery, your surgeon will make either three small cuts or one small cut in the abdomen to reach the hernia. The herniated piece of bowel or fatty tissue is moved back into place. A piece of medical mesh is then stitched or glued into position to strengthen the muscle and reduce the risk of the hernia coming back. An advantage of keyhole surgery is that hernias on both sides can often be repaired during the same procedure, without extra cuts and with only a small increase in operating time.
In open surgery, the steps of the repair are similar. The main difference is that one larger cut is made, usually about 6 to 8 cm long.
Your surgeon will talk through the options and advise on the best one for you.
Why choose Cromwell Hospital?
We have a team of experienced consultant general surgeons who have developed their skills and knowledge working in some of the leading NHS teaching hospitals in London.
Our surgeons work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), which includes other consultants and experts from different specialties. They meet regularly to review complex cases to ensure the best possible care for each patient.
We are one of the few hospitals in the UK with two types of robotic surgery systems. This allows us to offer minimally invasive hernia surgery where appropriate, helping patients recover faster and return to normal activities sooner.
If you get in touch with us, we can offer a consultation to assess your case the next day. We also offer a rapid route through to surgery, so you can be seen, cared for and recover in the fastest time possible.
What is the recovery period?
Recovery after hernia repair surgery can vary depending on things like your age, overall fitness, and the type of procedure you have. However, most patients are able to go home on the same day.
You will usually need pain relief for the first two weeks. Most people can return to full exercise, including heavy lifting, about six weeks after surgery.
Our specialist nurses and physiotherapists will support you after your operation and work closely with you to help you recover as quickly as possible.
