Tonsillectomy
A tonsillectomy is the surgical procedure to remove the tonsils.
About a tonsillectomy
A tonsillectomy is a surgery to remove the tonsils. The tonsils are two lumps of tissue located in the back of the throat which help the immune system to protect the body from infection.
The surgery is one of the most common surgery for children and teens. It is performed for various reasons including infection of the tonsils, and swollen tonsils blocking the airway and making it hard to breathe.
What happens during the procedure?
The procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes and is performed under general anaesthetic. It is performed through the mouth, so no external cuts will be visible.
As each case varies, your surgeon will talk you through all detailed steps prior to the procedure.
What is the recovery period?
The recovery period varies for each case, your healthcare team will advise you on the next steps and will support you throughout your journey with us.
After the procedure, you may feel tired. It is important to rest on the day and the following day, this will allow you to recover from the general anaesthetic.
