A message from Georgiana Badea, IT Director
Welcome to June’s consultant newsletter.
As we continue to advance our Digital Hospital transformation, I would like to provide an update on the significant progress we are making across infrastructure resilience, clinical innovation, digital capability, and overall technology experience at Cromwell Hospital.
Our ambition is clear: to deliver a world-class, digitally enabled clinical environment that supports you in providing exceptional patient care. This means ensuring that information is accessible, systems are reliable, and technology enhances – rather than hinders – your clinical workflows. There is still a lot of work to do to become a fully digitised environment, but we have clear plans underway to help us achieve that.
Through 2026, we have made meaningful progress in modernising our technology estate and introducing capabilities that directly benefit clinical practice. These advancements are part of a cohesive strategy focused on connected care, improved access to data, and enabling real-time collaboration and decision-making across the hospital.
Advancing surgical education: Da Vinci and Intuitive Hub integration
Cromwell Hospital has successfully implemented an innovative teaching and training capability by integrating the Da Vinci robotic surgery system with the Intuitive Hub.
This integration has enabled the live streaming of the surgical field and wider theatre environment, as well as real-time case observation and mentoring. This capability will be used by Mr Amer Raza, marking the first live utilisation of telepresence for education and mentoring in practice.
Led by Mr Amer Raza, Consultant Gynaecologist and internationally recognised robotic surgery specialist, this initiative represents a major advancement in surgical education and collaboration.
This has been delivered through close partnership across clinical, digital, theatre, and infrastructure teams, further strengthening Cromwell’s position at the forefront of adopting advanced surgical technologies.
Digital medical records: OnBase
On 15 June, we introduced OnBase, Cromwell’s digital medical records viewing system, marking a key milestone in our transition away from paper-based records.
The key benefits of this include:
- the digitisation of all paper patient records
- rapid access to records across the hospital
- indexed documents for fast search and retrieval
- no change to document creation in the initial phase
The system is available via Microsoft Edge (Cromwell Favourites), features single sign-on, and user accounts are already provisioned.

Introducing OnBase EMR
We're excited to share that OnBase EMR Phase 1 went live on Monday 15 June across Cromwell Hospital, marking a significant milestone in our Digital Hospital programme.
What is OnBase?
OnBase is our new platform for managing clinical documentation – enabling electronic scanning, secure storage, and easy access to patient records.
It brings together historical patient information in one place, supporting clinicians and teams with faster, more reliable access to records when they need them most.
What this means for you
This is the first phase of a wider transformation, and you’ll start to see:
- digital access to historical patient records (view-only at this stage)
- improved speed and efficiency in accessing clinical documentation
- a move away from paper-heavy processes towards a more modern, streamlined way of working
- secure, role-based access to patient information
Paper records will be used during a patient’s stay. After discharge, documents will be scanned into OnBase. Outpatient records will be available within 24 hours
Please note, all paper documents must include a patient label to ensure correct filing.
Why this matters
This phase will:
- reduce reliance on paper records
- improve access to information across the hospital
- strengthen governance, traceability, and compliance
- support future digital documentation and integrated EMR capabilities
Supporting you through the change
Support will be available throughout go-live:
- training sessions and drop-ins via QR code
- onsite support from IT and the project team
- FAQs and quick guides
- a Freeset number for go-live support
How to access OnBase
To access OnBase, please visit the link below or find it in the 'Cromwell Favourites' folder on your browser.
User accounts have already been created and single sign-on is enabled.
iQemo
We are pleased to share that iQemo will be introduced at Cromwell Hospital as our new specialist oncology management system, replacing Aria for systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) prescribing. This change has been shaped by feedback from our consultants and wider Oncology team, who highlighted the importance of more intuitive workflows, greater flexibility, and continued support for the delivery of high-quality patient care.
In response, iQemo has been selected as a best-in-class SACT prescribing and management platform, designed around intuitive clinical workflows, patient safety, and ease of prescribing.
The switchover from Aria to iQemo is planned for mid-July. From this point, iQemo will become the sole SACT prescribing system at Cromwell Hospital. We have also heard the importance of minimising disruption during this transition, and there will be no impact on any other digital systems you currently use within the hospital.
This change will also support the Oncology Pharmacy team to move towards a more fully digitised prescribing and dispensing process.
To provide a more complete view of each patient’s oncology treatment pathway, relevant non-SACT supportive treatments administered in CDU or on the Oncology ward will also be documented in iQemo where appropriate. This will not change existing consultant workflows for these treatments.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed feedback and insight as we prepare for this important improvement. Further details will follow as we move closer to launch. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact Emma Storey at [email protected].
Transformation update
Words by Sheena Murchie, Head of Diagnostics and Imaging
We are delighted to share the exciting news that our three new scanners have now been delivered and are scheduled for installation over the coming weeks, with a planned go-live at the end of June.
We recognise that maintaining a full hospital service throughout the ongoing construction works – particularly with frequently changing layouts – has not been easy, and we would like to sincerely thank you all for your patience and resilience. We are now entering the final phase, bringing us closer to launching the full suite of our diagnostic imaging facilities.
As part of this expansion, we have received our new SPECT-CT scanner. This dual-modality system will significantly enhance our capabilities in theranostics, supporting the growth of our oncology services. It will also enable a more comprehensive orthopaedic and spinal offering, including the detection of occult bone injuries, assessment of localised inflammation, lung perfusion imaging, and improved diagnostics for epilepsy and seizure disorders, among many other applications.
In addition, we have introduced two new MRI scanners to meet increasing demand for imaging services, which are now operating seven days a week. A 3T MRI scanner has been installed in place of the former angiography suite on the ground floor. Equipped with advanced AI software, it will support faster image acquisition and significantly reduce scan times. For our paediatric patients and those who may experience claustrophobia, the new extremity MRI suite provides a more open, calming environment designed to improve patient comfort and experience.
With only a few weeks to go until full launch, we would like to extend our sincere thanks once again for your patience and support during the renovation period. We look forward to welcoming your patients and delivering care with some of the most advanced imaging technology available.
PACS remote access
As our consultant body continues to work across multiple sites within DASCL, we recognise the importance of having quick, reliable access to imaging wherever you are.
To support this, all consultants with practising privileges now have access to remote PACS viewing, allowing you to review imaging securely when offsite or away from the hospital.
How to access
You can access PACS remotely via the Citrix platform. Simply log in using your Cromwell email address and network password.
Once connected, you will have live access to PACS, including from mobile devices where enabled.
Why use remote PACS?
Moving to the new viewing platform offers several benefits:
- Immediate access to imaging – review scans without needing to be onsite
- Improved clinical decision-making – access images during MDTs, clinics, or urgent consultations
- Greater flexibility – work efficiently across different DASCAL locations or remotely
- Enhanced user experience – a modern, more intuitive platform replacing legacy systems
- Supports mobile working – access imaging on the go where appropriate
As part of our system improvement programme, we are phasing out Biotronics over the next three to six months. We encourage all consultants to begin using the new PACS viewing platform now to ensure a smooth transition.
If you experience any issues accessing remote PACS, please contact our IT team at [email protected] or 020 7460 5920 (internal: 6344).
Reservations team update
The Reservations team is now fully established and operating at increased capacity following a significant expansion. We have grown from four to nine Admissions Officers, supported by a supervisor, strengthening team resilience and enhancing our ability to respond effectively to service demand.
As part of this expansion, we have welcomed Andrenikii Cato as our dedicated Angio Admissions Officer. This role has played a key part in streamlining angio bookings and supporting ad‑hoc capacity management across Angio and Theatres, particularly in response to increased activity levels.
The booking process is now fully operational and performing well. Increased staffing levels and a revised team structure enable us to process booking requests promptly, with the majority of cases being booked swiftly, even when procedures are scheduled several weeks or months in advance.
Our target is to acknowledge booking requests within two hours and to confirm bookings within 24 hours. Where confirmation exceeds 24 hours, this is typically due to the complexity of the cases involved (for example, cardiac or robotic procedures), where theatre availability and equipment constraints require additional coordination with consultants to identify a suitable date.
We have developed a pathway with our Pre‑Admission Clinic team as part of the Pre‑Assessment Transformation Journey, whereby the Pre‑Admission Clinic team leads on clinical triage, completing telephone triages in the first instance for surgical patients. This enables early identification of required investigations and timely confirmation or adjustment of admission times, including bringing admission times forward where same‑day tests are required. Cardiac and other higher‑risk pathways are booked directly into the Pre‑Admission Clinic for a face‑to‑face pre‑admission appointment, supporting safe and timely clinical decision‑making.

We are pleased to congratulate Dr Devinder Bansi, Consultant Gastroenterologist, on receiving the European Quality Achievement Award 2026 from the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR) in Brussels.
Reflecting on this achievement, Dr Bansi commented: “It has been a huge pleasure and privilege proctoring colleagues in EndoBariatric techniques across UK and Europe these last few years and at the same time serving as Chair for Quality and Performance Improvement in Endoscopy and Digestive Health at the innovative and rapidly expanding Welbeck Health Partners group in London.
This award is as much for the wonderful colleagues and teams I work with as it is for me. It is not an endpoint but serves to further strengthen my desire to continue to strive for quality and excellence in healthcare.”

“I had an appointment with Ms Babar, who provided an exceptional service. She has an incredibly kind and patient manner, which I really appreciated.
