A message from Dr Sarah Frankton, Chief Medical Officer

Welcome to my first consultant newsletter of the year – I hope 2026 is starting out to be a fantastic year for you and your practice.

One of my key areas of focus in the last couple of years has been around education and developing opportunities for our Resident Medical Officers and future consultants. Last year, we hosted our first cohort of QMUL medical students, and we have just said goodbye to our second cohort of students. We have now almost finished recruiting some very high-calibre permanent RMOs in Surgery, Oncology, and Cardiology. Not only will this help support you and your patients, but it will also provide RMO opportunities in areas where we know there are NHS training bottlenecks.

Dr Amit Kaur recently stepped into the role of Director of Research and Innovation; many will know Amit from his years as Lead Cardiac RMO here, and we are in the process of hiring a Head of Education and Professional Development for doctors. Amit has already developed a Research Governance Framework to allow us to start publishing some of our outcomes and data in line with UK regulations. We also have a part time Clinical Research Fellow, Saima Farooq, who is busy collecting outcome data from our robotics gynaecology service.

Across the hospital, there are many exciting developments; the Neurology team are working hard to offer Donanemab, a treatment for patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Cromwell Hospital was also the first hospital in Europe to offer Teplizumab to a patient in order to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes, in partnership with our colleagues at London Medical. With the new therapy department opening in Lexham Gardens, there is a renewed focus on our neuro-rehabilitation services. Working with the Therapies and Business Development teams, we have strengthened our neuro-rehabilitation pathways and are exploring the possibility of a hydrotherapy pool.

At Cromwell Hospital and across the wider Bupa network, we work dynamically for innovation and patient care. The My Genomic Health Pilot has been running for over two years, and we are now collecting secondary care outcome data for possible publication. In addition, we hope to be able to offer Whole Genome Sequencing as part of our Executive Heath Assessment at Cromwell Hospital in the next few weeks.

The Oncology department has several exciting projects this year, including the launch of iChemo, and we are also now working on a Metastatic Cord Compression pathway with our oncologists, spinal surgeons, and colleagues in Genesis Care. A new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for our Acute Oncology Service is also well underway as well as additional clinical pathways, including plans for an Iron Infusion Clinic and several new policies for patient sedation.

The Medical Director’s Office Team is growing to support consultant movement across our Hospitals and Diagnostic Centres.

Our Pre-assessment clinic is now staffed with anaesthetic cover; you can find out more about Dr Safeena Afzal, Consultant Anaesthetist, in the article below.

Cromwell Hospital wins robotic surgery award

Cromwell Hospital is proud to have received the Outstanding Healthcare Provider Award from Surgical Robotics Technology.

This award recognises our leadership in utilising the Intuitive da Vinci SP robotic system, the latest addition to our robotic‑assisted surgery programme.

As this award was voted for by the public, we are especially grateful to be acknowledged as leaders in the field of robotic‑assisted surgery.

A huge thank you to our exceptional consultants and theatre teams, whose expertise and dedication continue to drive the success of our programme.

New diagnostic capabilities at Cromwell Hospital

Following the opening of our refreshed diagnostics facilities, two additional MRI scanners will be installed at Cromwell Hospital at the end of June. This investment supports growing demand, improves access to timely diagnostics, and enables more efficient, one‑stop patient pathways.

The installation will include our first 3T MRI scanner alongside a dedicated extremity scanner. The 3T system will enhance diagnostic capability through improved image quality, higher resolution, and advanced imaging techniques, supporting more confident diagnosis and complex clinical decision‑making.

The extremity scanner will improve patient experience and access, particularly for claustrophobic and paediatric patients. Its open design enhances comfort while freeing capacity on main MRI systems. Integrated AI software further improves image quality and enables shorter, more consistent scan times.

Together, these scanners will increase capacity, reduce waiting times, and support multidisciplinary clinical pathways, ensuring high‑quality diagnostics aligned with best practice.

In the same week, the new Siemens Symbia Pro.specta SPECT system will be mobilised, strengthening nuclear medicine capability. This will support the continued growth of the theranostics programme and myocardial perfusion service, delivering more precise functional imaging across oncology and cardiology services.

For more information, please contact Sheena Murchie, Head of Diagnostics and Imaging.

An update on our Reservations team

The Reservations team is now fully established and operating at increased capacity following a significant expansion. We have grown from four to nine Admissions Officers, supported by a Supervisor, strengthening team resilience and enhancing our ability to respond effectively to service demand.

As part of this expansion, we have welcomed Nikky as our dedicated Angio Admissions Officer. This role has played a key part in streamlining angio bookings and supporting ad‑hoc capacity management across Angio and Theatres, particularly in response to increased activity levels.

The booking process is now fully operational and performing well. Increased staffing levels and a revised team structure enable us to process booking requests promptly, with the majority of cases being booked swiftly, even when procedures are scheduled several weeks or months in advance.

Our target is to acknowledge booking requests within two hours and to confirm bookings within 24 hours. Where confirmation exceeds 24 hours, this is typically due to the complexity of the cases involved (for example, cardiac or robotic procedures), where theatre availability and equipment constraints require additional coordination with consultants to identify a suitable date.

We have developed a pathway with our Pre‑Admission Clinic team as part of the Pre‑Assessment Transformation Journey, whereby the Pre‑Admission Clinic team leads on clinical triage, completing telephone triages in the first instance for surgical patients. This enables early identification of required investigations and timely confirmation or adjustment of admission times, including bringing admission times forward where same‑day tests are required. Cardiac and other higher‑risk pathways are booked directly into the Pre‑Admission Clinic for a face‑to‑face pre‑admission appointment, supporting safe and timely clinical decision‑making.

Pre-assessment clinic update

Our pre‑assessment clinic now offers anaesthetic coverage, providing enhanced support for you and your patients.

Any abnormal results will be reviewed promptly, and if further discussion is needed, Dr Afzal will contact you and your anaesthetist directly.

Dr Safeena Afzal said:

“I'm Dr Safeena Afzal and it's a pleasure to be starting in my role as a medical co-lead for the rapidly growing Cromwell Hospital Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic; the medical aspect of the POA clinic is new, and I am supported by Dr John Cousins and Dr Sarah Frankton.

I will be based mainly in POA (2A Pennant Mews) and will be leading on introducing a High-Risk Anaesthetic Clinic and working on the digitalisation of our POA services. I will also be reaching out to engage with our consultant body soon, to understand how to best manage patient optimisation and flow for Cromwell Hospital in recognition of our ever-increasing surgical workload.

I look forward to working with many of you, whether through my POA work or anaesthetising in theatres.”

Dr Safeena Afzal, Consultant Anaesthetist

Notice: New process for Qatar Medical patient invoice submission and reconciliation

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Qatar has appointed MSH International QFC LLC (MSH) as the authorised partner to review, reconcile, and settle all outstanding invoices for QMO-sponsored patients for services provided up to 31 December 2025. MSH will work directly with healthcare providers on behalf of QMO and aims to clear all outstanding debt within seven months.

MSH will manage invoice review, reconciliation, query resolution, and payment coordination with MoPH and QMO. To support this, MoPH launched a digital portal in mid-December for submitting outstanding invoices, tracking payment status, and accessing remittance information. Required documentation includes patient details, Letters of Guarantee, invoices, and relevant medical reports. MSH will provide onboarding support and training.

All future queries and submissions relating to QMO-sponsored patients should be directed to MSH. Providers are requested to acknowledge receipt of this communication.

For further information, please contact Nour Amin, International Patient Centre Manager on 020 7460 5586.

Renal denervation

At the end of 2025, Dr Sayan Sen, Consultant Cardiologist, performed Cromwell Hospital’s first renal denervation case, achieving excellent outcomes. Renal denervation remains a pioneering treatment, currently available in only a small number of private hospitals in the UK.

This innovative procedure has been shown to reduce blood pressure in around half of patients who undergo it, helping individuals better manage hypertension when used alongside medication and lifestyle changes.

Staff spotlight: Kelly Stewart, Head of Nursing and Clinical Services for Diagnostic and Outpatient Centres

We are delighted to introduce Kelly Stewart, who joined Bupa earlier this year as Head of Nursing and Clinical Services for Diagnostic and Outpatient Centres.

Kelly brings a wealth of experience, with over 24 years in the NHS at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. During her tenure, she developed significant expertise within the Lane Fox Unit Respiratory Service and the Respiratory Diagnostics Outpatients Clinic. She also played a key role in implementing the National Lung Cancer Screening Programme across South East London.

In her new role at Bupa, Kelly will oversee nursing and clinical services across our Diagnostic and Outpatient Centres, including London Medical, Basinghall Clinic, and the soon-to-launch Bupa Health Care Canary Wharf.

New: Disease-modifying treatment for early Alzheimer’s

Cromwell Hospital is one of the few centres in London now able to offer a new treatment option for people diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease.

Donanemab (Kisunla) is an anti‑amyloid therapy that works by helping to remove amyloid plaques from the brain – a key feature of Alzheimer’s.

Studies show that Donanemab can slow both cognitive and functional decline in suitable patients, especially when started early. While not a cure, the therapy represents an important step forward in modifying disease progression rather than solely managing symptoms.

The treatment is given monthly by intravenous infusion, with MRI scans used to monitor for amyloid‑related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), a known possible side effect.

Treatment is delivered by an expert multidisciplinary team, which includes Dr Justin Sauer (Consultant Psychiatrist), Dr Angus Kennedy (Consultant Neurologist), Joseph Samson (Nurse and Patient Pathway Coordinator), Jair Balanta (Medical Coordinator), and neuroradiology and infusion service colleagues.

Patient referrals

Suitability for treatment can often be assessed after a memory evaluation. For patients who may be suitable or interested, please contact Jair Balanta, Medical Coordinator, on 020 7460 5773.

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)

We would like to draw your attention to our endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) service for lung cancer investigations. This service is delivered on a weekly basis by Dr Reza Abdullah, Consultant in Respiratory Medicine.

This advanced diagnostic service is ideal for patients presenting with suspected lung cancer or lung abnormalities. EBUS not only helps confirm the presence of cancer but also provides valuable information about tumour size and potential metastasis. Where appropriate, biopsies can be taken during the procedure to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Patients are welcome to self‑refer or can be referred by a consultant.

REDI for Change

The REDI for Change Network at Cromwell Hospital is the organisation’s internal Respect, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) initiative. It exists to ensure that everyone working or practising at the hospital, and our patients, feel supported, represented, and able to thrive.

What does REDI do?

REDI’s aim is to:

  • Promote an inclusive culture: The network works to create an environment where staff, consultants, partners, and patients feel comfortable being their authentic selves.
  • Ensure diverse perspectives are heard: It serves as a channel for gathering and sharing viewpoints from across the hospital influencing hospital‑wide initiatives.
  • Drive education and awareness: Through events, training, and conversations, the network raises awareness of different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences within the hospital.
  • Celebrate our diversity: Through events and education, the network celebrates our staff and patients.

If you are interested in learning more about REDI or being involved in our celebrations or awareness activity, contact REDI for Change at [email protected].

Consulting room directories

We now have updated directories in every consulting room outlining all specialties and services available in-house at London Medical.

Strengthening internal referrals allows us to enhance continuity of care, improve patient experience, and retain activity within London Medical.

Patient check-in process

Patients attending for diagnostic tests should be directed to reception on arrival to complete check-in before proceeding to their appointment.

Credit card policy

A reminder that our credit card policy applies to all patients. It is essential that card details are collected in line with London Medical’s payment procedures to ensure a smooth and consistent patient journey.

We’ll keep you updated on progress and share confirmed timelines as soon as they’re available. Thank you for your patience and ongoing support while we work to get this back up and running.

Please note: our MRI, mammography, and ultrasound services are operating as normal.
