A message from Steve Bellingham, Chief Nursing Officer

As we enter the final quarter of the year, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the progress we have made together and the opportunities ahead.

Our success continues to be built on the strength of our partnerships with consultants. Your expertise, commitment to clinical excellence, and contribution to service development enable us to deliver outstanding care for patients while strengthening Cromwell's reputation as a leading provider of specialist healthcare. Thank you for the role you play every day, not only in caring for individual patients, but in helping shape the future of our organisation.

Over recent months, we have continued to invest in our services and clinical infrastructure to support future demand and create the conditions for sustainable growth. A key example is the opening of our dedicated Gynaecology and Urology ward. Bringing these services together creates a more specialised environment for patients, supported by teams with focused expertise, while also improving patient flow and creating greater flexibility across the wider hospital. This is an important step in ensuring our clinical estate evolves alongside the needs of our patients and consultant community.

We have also relocated cardiology investigations into the main hospital. By bringing diagnostics closer to inpatient and clinical services, we are creating a more connected and efficient experience for patients and clinicians alike. This reflects our broader Connected Care strategy, enabling greater integration between diagnostics, treatment, and ongoing management, and supporting more seamless patient pathways.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for the final phase of our outpatient capacity programme, due to open later this year. This investment will further enhance access to specialist services, support growing demand, and provide additional opportunities to develop and expand our clinical offering.

Our focus on collaboration across specialties is already delivering tangible results. I am delighted that our Women's Health Pathway recently received a Best of Bupa Award, recognising the outstanding multidisciplinary work that has gone into designing a more integrated and responsive experience for patients. It is a great example of what can be achieved when consultants, nurses, allied health professionals, and operational teams work together with a shared purpose.

Quality remains at the heart of everything we do, and I would also like to acknowledge the excellent outcome of the recent North West London Critical Care Network peer assessment of our Intensive Care Unit. The feedback highlighted the quality of care, professionalism, and strong multidisciplinary working that underpin our critical care service. External peer review provides an important opportunity for learning and assurance, and this recognition is a credit to everyone involved in delivering care to some of our most complex patients.

Innovation is not only about facilities and pathways; it is also about bringing fresh thinking into the organisation. Through Bupa's Horizon programme, we have welcomed colleagues from other parts of the business who are helping us challenge existing processes and accelerate improvement. One assignment is focused on opportunities to strengthen pre-assessment pathways and increase the use of digital solutions to improve both patient and clinician experience. Another is supporting the development of more effective audit and assurance processes, helping us streamline governance activities while strengthening organisational learning. These collaborations demonstrate the value of drawing on expertise from across Bupa to support continuous improvement and innovation.

Just as importantly, we continue to strengthen our commitment to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and able to bring their authentic selves to work. The diversity of our workforce is one of Cromwell's greatest strengths, enriching our thinking, broadening perspectives, and ultimately enhancing the care we provide to patients. Building on the foundations established through our Respect, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion work, I am pleased to see the evolution of this agenda through our 'Be You at Cromwell and Diagnostic Centres' network. Bringing together colleagues from across Cromwell Hospital, Canary Wharf, Basinghall Clinic, and London Medical, this renewed focus creates opportunities to connect, learn from one another, and foster a culture where inclusion is embedded in everyday practice. In an organisation that cares for a uniquely diverse patient population, creating a strong sense of belonging for our people is both a moral responsibility and an important contributor to delivering exceptional care.

We are also proud to have been shortlisted as finalists in the LaingBuisson Awards. Recognition of this kind reflects the collective expertise, innovation, and commitment that exists across Cromwell Hospital and is something everyone involved should take great pride in.

As we close out the year, I am encouraged by the progress we are making together. Whether through service redesign, innovation, quality improvement, collaboration across Bupa, or our continued commitment to inclusion, we are creating the conditions for even better care and experiences for our patients. Thank you for your continued partnership, support and commitment to excellence. Every success we achieve is built on the expertise and dedication of our multidisciplinary teams and consultant community working together for the benefit of those we serve.

New Gynaecology and Urology ward

We are delighted to share that Cromwell Hospital's new dedicated Gynaecology and Urology ward officially opened on Monday 5 October.

Located on the west wing of the Third Floor, the ward has launched with 11 inpatient beds and is supported by a dedicated workforce and specialist clinical teams. This marks an important milestone in our commitment to delivering high-quality, specialty-focused care and supporting the continued growth of our Gynaecology and Urology services.

The development has been shaped by feedback from consultants and multidisciplinary teams across the hospital, recognising the value of a dedicated environment, specialist nursing support, and patient pathways tailored to the unique needs of Gynaecology and Urology patients.

The ward is led by Cynthia Ennevor and supported by a dedicated nursing team, working in partnership with our clinical nurse specialists and clinical nurse educators. Together, they are focused on delivering a seamless patient experience while continuing to build the specialist knowledge, skills, and expertise required to support these evolving services.

By bringing dedicated nursing, medical, and multidisciplinary colleagues together, the new ward will strengthen collaboration, enhance continuity of care, and improve the experience of both patients and clinicians. As the service develops, we will continue to refine and enhance our approach, informed by ongoing learning and feedback.

We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the planning and launch of this exciting development. We look forward to welcoming more patients to the ward and working together to realise the full benefits of this specialist service.

Iron Infusion Clinic

The Iron Infusion Clinic at Cromwell Hospital provides intravenous iron therapy for patients with iron deficiency anaemia. Referrals can be made by consultants, GPs, and the pre-operative assessment team using the dedicated Iron Infusion Clinic booking form.

Patients may be considered for referral where their results meet the clinic criteria:

  • haemoglobin (Hb) <130 g/L and ferritin <30 ng/ml or
  • Hb <130 g/L, ferritin 30–100 ng/ml and transferrin saturation (TSAT) <20%

For patients undergoing surgery, the booking form also captures the planned procedure and surgery date to support appropriate assessment and timing of treatment.

To refer a patient, please complete Iron Infusion Clinic booking form, including the relevant blood results, clinical history, allergies, and patient details, and email it to [email protected]. Patients can indicate a preferred treatment site of Cromwell Hospital or London Medical.

Service spotlight: Interventional Radiology

Our Interventional Radiology service supports technically challenging biopsies, including small and difficult-to-access lesions, and offers minimally invasive tumour ablation for selected liver and lung tumours. Consultants are welcome to discuss cases and review imaging to explore diagnostic and treatment options.

This will be provided by Dr Edward Johnston, Consultant Interventional Radiologist, who specialises in image-guided biopsy and minimally invasive cancer treatment.

Temporary workaround for accessing pathology results in MAXIMS

The Cromwell IT team would like to make all consultants aware of a current issue affecting Pathology > Orders/Results within MAXIMS Undercomes.

Users have reported when accessing certain pathology results, the system becomes unresponsive and crashes when the result is selected.

Until a permanent fix is implemented, please follow the steps below when opening pathology results:

  1. Navigate to Pathology > Orders/Results
  2. Locate the required pathology result.
  3. Do not left mouse click on the result row, as this may cause MAXIMS to hang and crash.
  4. Instead, right mouse click on the required result row.
  5. The pathology result should open successfully when accessed using the right-click method.

This is a temporary workaround while the issue is being investigated. Please continue to use the right-click method when accessing pathology results until we provide an update that a permanent resolution is available.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your cooperation.

Introducing easier password resets for Cromwell Hospital colleagues

Have you ever forgotten your work password or entered it incorrectly too many times and found yourself locked out of your Cromwell account?

It can be disruptive and time-consuming to get back to work after this happens, which is why we’ve introduced Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) for all Cromwell Hospital colleagues.

What is Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)?

SSPR is a security feature that allows you to reset your password or unlock your account without the need to contact the IT Service Desk. You can regain access to your Cromwell account in just a few minutes using work or personal devices, saving you time and effort.

When would you need to use SSPR?

You can use SSPR if you have forgotten your work password or locked yourself out of your Cromwell account by mistake.

You can use SSPR 24/7, 365 days a year, so it is available for you to use no matter what your working pattern.

What to do now?

In order to use SSPR, you must:

  • Have Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) set up on your Cromwell account. This is a critical step in the SSPR process. You can set this up using Steps 1-3 in this guide: Setting up Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) A step-by-step guide. You will only need to do this once.
  • Save the link required to start the SSPR process before you ever need to use it. Save https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com on your work device and your personal device now. If you’re ever locked out of your work device, having a link elsewhere will save you time and effort.

How to use SSPR when you need it?

You can find the full process for using SSPR in the guide.

Please note, if you set up MFA now, you will be able to go directly to Step 4 of the guide when you need to reset your password or unlock your account.

SSPR is here to give Cromwell Hospital colleagues greater control over your work account. However, if you ever have issues relating to password resets, you can still contact the Cromwell IT Service Desk on 020 7460 5999.
