About Dr Ferruccio De Lorenzo

Dr Ferruccio De Lorenzo obtained his specialist training in General Internal Medicine in London hospitals, both the PhD and Diploma in general Medicine at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London in July 2001. He received a Clinician Scientist Award by the Thrombosis Research Institute in 2003 and linked the Institute with several NHS hospitals to run clinical trials to investigate the mechanism of thrombosis, the efficacy and safety of anticoagulants in patients with deep vein thrombosis, heart failure and coronary heart disease.

Patients seen in the Dr De Lorenzo's clinic are:
• patients who are intolerant of first-line lipid-lowering treatment
• patients who do not achieve target lipid levels with first-line lipid lowering treatment (primary and secondary cardiovascular disease prevention)
• patients with inherited disorders of lipid metabolism, including familial hypercholesterolaemia and familial combined hypercholesterolaemia
• relatives of patients with inherited lipid disorders who may require genetic screening
• patients for whom it is uncertain whether lipid lowering therapy is indicated

The Bristish Medical Journal, published by the British Medical Association, reported both an editorial and an article describing Dr De Lorenzo achieving a substantial Consultant Physician role at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London in 2006, combining both clinical practice and research.

Dr De Lorenzo was nominated in 2006-07-08 for a Senior Clinical Lectureship by the higher education funding council for England, and in 2021 was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in London, the Fellowship of the British and Irish Hypertension Society, and the USA Society for Heart Attack Prevention and eradication specialist certificate. Dr De Lorenzo worked closely for many years with two pioneers and founding fathers of clinical lipidology and thrombosis, Professor Gil Thompson and Professor Vijay Kakkar. He is now an Honorary Consultant Physician at the Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and at the Cromwell Hospital in London.

At the Hammersmith Hospital, Dr De Lorenzo has also investigated with his team the efficacy and safety of the new injectable lipid lowering agent Incliseran in patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia showing clinical advantages, efficacy and safety. All those data have been reported in peer reviewed international medical journals.

Recently, Dr De Lorenzo has been nominated for the Imperial College Alumni Distinguished Award 2027.
