This stands for transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT). It is a minimally invasive operation which is carried out to remove abnormal growths from the bladder. The operation does not involve any skin cuts (incisions) or sutures.

Who is suitable for an endoscopic resection of lesion of bladder?

This treatment is most commonly used to treat patients with suspected bladder cancer. It is also used to treat patients who already have the diagnosis of bladder cancer. Removal of the affected lesions aims to treat your bladder cancer and stop symptoms.

What does it involve?

Most of the time, patients will first have a cystoscopy test, which is an endoscopic examination that aims at checking the health of your bladder and helps your surgeon see your bladder clearly, identifying the tumours.  

Before the procedure, patients are placed under general or spinal anaesthesia. The duration of the procedure varies between 15 minutes and more than 60 minutes, depending on the number and size of the tumours.  

Your surgeon will pass an endoscope through the urethra into the bladder and remove the tumour(s).  A catheter (plastic drainage tube) is inserted into the bladder and irrigation is used to washout the bladder gently after the operation. A chemical liquid may be injected into the bladder through the catheter to reduce the risk of recurrence of the tumours. The tissue that is removed is then sent to the laboratory so that it can be examined by a pathology consultant to make a diagnosis. The results of the analysis will usually be ready 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.

What is the recovery period?

The length of time it takes you to recover from the operation depends on a range of factors, including your age and medical conditions if you have any.  

Some patients can go home on the same day as their procedure, whereas others may need to stay one or two nights in hospital.  If you have a catheter inserted after your TURBT operation, this will usually be removed before you go home. Your surgeon will be able to advise you on the likely recovery period for you.
