Transperineal MRI-US fusion targeted prostate biopsy
This procedure uses ultrasound and MRI scans to accurately take a biopsy sample from the prostate gland, which can then be checked for cancer and cancer staging.
Who can have a Transperineal MRI fusion targeted prostate biopsy?
The procedure is most commonly carried out on men with suspected prostate cancer, often following a raised PSA result. It can also be a useful and accurate test to find out if cancerous cells have changed, if there is a pre-existing cancer.
What does a Transperineal MRI fusion targeted prostate biopsy involve?
During the procedure, your surgeon will place an ultrasound probe into your bottom allowing your surgeon to see your prostate. The surgeon will then layer an image previously taken via MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) over the live ultrasound image, enabling biopsy samples to be taken accurately from the areas of the prostate gland that look abnormal.
By using both the ultrasound and MRI scan together, your surgeon can be more precise and targeted when collecting the biopsy. This targeted approach means that less samples need to be taken and you’re also less likely to experience side-effects compared with other techniques for collecting prostate biopsies. Additional biopsies are also taken of other areas to double check the MRI has not missed anything.
The procedure takes around 20-30 minutes, of which you will be under general anaesthetic or deep sedation. The procedure can also be done under pure local anaesthetic as well if you choose.
What is the recovery period?
The recovery period for a transperineal MRI fusion targeted prostate biopsy depends on various factors, including your age.
Usually, you will only need to stay in hospital for one night whilst you recover. Our dedicated urology specialist nurse will work with you closely after your operation to make sure you recover as quickly as possible.
