Prostate Cancer UK
Cromwell Hospital has partnered with Prostate Cancer UK to empower men to know their risk and get checked for prostate cancer.
Partnering for prostate health
Cromwell Hospital is proud to partner with Prostate Cancer UK to drive significant progress in men’s prostate health. Our goal is to break down the barriers of stigma and embarrassment that can prevent early detection and treatment.
Together, we have a shared mission to empower every man with the knowledge and confidence to understand their risk and to support those with a diagnosis to navigate their cancer journey.
What is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer can develop when the cells in your prostate gland start to divide or grow in an uncontrolled way. Depending on the type of cancer you have, this can either happen very slowly or very fast.
The prostate is a gland that is part of the reproductive system and is responsible for producing semen.
Symptoms of prostate cancer
Most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any symptoms. If you notice any changes when you urinate, or if you have any of the symptoms listed below, it could be a sign of a prostate condition, such as an enlarged prostate.
Things to look out for include:
- difficulty when starting to pee
- a weak flow of urine
- dribbling urine before and after urinating
- a sensation of having not totally emptied your bladder fully after peeing
- needing to pee urgently or more often
- waking up in the night to pee more often
If you have these symptoms, it is important to find out what is causing them. You should visit a GP or urologist as soon as possible so you can get the right diagnosis and treatment.
What is a PSA blood test?
A PSA test checks the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. High levels may be a sign of a prostate condition.
Any man in the UK who is interested in having a PSA blood test can have one – you do not have to have any symptoms.
Depending on the result of your PSA blood test, you may be referred for more tests, such as an MRI scan.
Prostate Cancer UK Risk Checker
The Prostate Cancer UK Risk Checker provides information about prostate cancer risk based on age, ethnicity, and family history of prostate cancer. For a personalised and thorough view of your risk – especially if you have symptoms or believe you may be at increased risk – please speak with a GP.
Although a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is available free of charge through the NHS, please be aware that accessing this test via private healthcare providers may incur a fee.
