Dr Anastasia Vamvakidou

Dr Anastasia Vamvakidou is a Consultant Cardiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. She graduated with an MBBS from Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, in 2005, where she achieved the highest graduation mark in her year. She subsequently completed her postgraduate medical and cardiology training in the UK, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2010 and completing her Cardiology Specialty Training through the London North West Deanery, receiving her Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology in 2022. She also holds an MSc in Cardiology and Management from the University of Brighton and a PhD in Cardiology from Imperial College London, where her research focused on the clinical value of stress echocardiography in the assessment of aortic stenosis.

Dr Vamvakidou provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of general cardiology. She has extensive experience in the assessment and management of patients with chest pain, coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, palpitations, breathlessness, valvular heart disease and cardiovascular risk assessment. She has a particular specialist interest in heart valve disease and advanced cardiovascular imaging.

She is fully accredited by the British Society of Echocardiography in all three echocardiographic modalities — transthoracic, stress and transoesophageal echocardiography — and is a British Society of Echocardiography assessor for both transthoracic and stress echocardiography accreditation. Her expertise includes advanced echocardiographic assessment of valve disease, heart failure, coronary artery disease, pulmonary hypertension and structural heart disease, together with multimodality cardiac imaging to guide complex clinical decision-making.

Dr Vamvakidou chairs the Mitral Valve Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and co-chairs the Endocarditis MDT, leading the multidisciplinary assessment and management of patients with complex valvular heart disease. She is actively involved in specialist valve services and uses advanced cardiac imaging to support both surgical and transcatheter valve interventions.

Alongside her clinical practice, Dr Vamvakidou has an active academic and educational role. She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer and Echocardiography Module Lead at Imperial College London, an elected Trustee of the British Society of Echocardiography, and serves as Associate Editor for several international cardiology journals. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, presents regularly at national and international cardiology conferences, and is committed to advancing cardiovascular imaging through research, education and evidence-based patient care.
