About Dr Nikesh Malik

Dr Malik is a Consultant Cardiologist and Interventionalist, practising in London and Surrey since May 2016. His current NHS practice is at St George’s Hospital in London and Epsom and St Helier Hospitals, where he is currently a clinical lead for coronary intervention. He graduated from St George's Hospital Medical School in London in 2002, achieving a Merit in Clinical Management. He subsequently undertook a postgraduate Interventional Research Fellowship leading to the award of an MD. He specialises in all areas of general cardiology, with particular expertise in coronary angioplasty and stenting, including complex techniques and intravascular imaging.

He sees adult patients with a range of cardiac symptoms, including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizzy spells and blackouts. He also investigates and manages patients with cardiac risk factors, including high blood pressure and cholesterol. His particular interest is in the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease.

He performs a high volume of coronary angioplasty and stenting procedures, including complex techniques, such as rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy and chronic total occlusions.

He undertakes detailed physiological and anatomical assessment of coronary arteries, including pressure wire studies and intracoronary imaging with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to optimise long term outcomes for his patients. He also arranges ECG monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, tilt table tests, echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, transoesophageal echocardiograms, cardiac MRI scans and inserts implantable loop recorders for long term monitoring of patients with palpitations, dizzy spells or collapses. He arranges insertion of permanent pacemakers if indicated.

Dr Malik’s research interests are in the prevention and treatment of coronary stent thrombosis and intravascular imaging, and he has completed a MD thesis in this subject. He has co-ordinated and been a co-investigator for numerous national and international clinical trials and research studies and he has published articles in high impact peer reviewed journals, as well as authoring several book chapters.

He is involved in teaching medical students from St George's Hospital Medical School and from overseas and he trains cardiology junior doctors and interventional fellows in all aspects of general cardiology and coronary intervention. He is a clinical supervisor to several cardiology trainees and educational supervisor to the cardiology registrar on his firm. He has organised and taught on numerous training courses, and he regularly delivers educational talks to GPs and training sessions for general medical and cardiology colleagues.
