About Dr Michael Flynn
He qualified in medicine (MBBCh, cum laude) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 2006, and completed his early clinical training at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town. After moving to the UK, he obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP UK) in 2012. Dr Flynn was awarded a PhD by UCL in 2016 for research into the pre-clinical pharmacology and mechanism of action of ADCT-301, an antibody-drug conjugate; this work led directly to first-in-human clinical trials in lymphoma and solid tumours. He completed his specialist training in medical oncology at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, gaining the Specialty Certificate in Medical Oncology in 2018 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Oncology from the University of London in 2019. In 2022 he undertook an observership in gynaecological oncology and early drug development at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston.
Since 2020 he has been a Consultant Medical Oncologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he treats women with ovarian, fallopian tube, primary peritoneal, endometrial (womb) and cervical cancers. He is Lead Principal Investigator of the UCLH Basket Studies Clinic, Acute Oncology Lead and Gynaecological Oncology Research Lead, and co-leads the oncology programme at the UCLH NIHR Early Phase Clinical Research Facility. He has served as UK Chief Investigator on international trials of novel treatments including PARP inhibitors, antibody-drug conjugates and immunotherapy, allowing his patients access to the newest therapies.
Dr Flynn has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of Oncology, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics and Hepatology, has contributed chapters to leading oncology textbooks and lectures nationally and internationally. He is committed to personalised, evidence-based care, working closely with each patient and the multidisciplinary team to tailor treatment to the individual. Outside medicine, he enjoys rowing, tennis and playing the piano.
