A message from Andrew Fairweather, Strategic Change and Implementation Director

Welcome to December's edition of the consultant newsletter.

As we close out the year, it’s important to reflect on the past 12 months and what an extraordinary year it has been. Cromwell Hospital is undergoing its most significant transformation since opening in 1981, and we’re delighted to end 2025 with the launch of the Lexham Gardens building, a major milestone in this expansion project.

The new Lexham Gardens extension provides dedicated space for Therapies and Radiology, paving the way for additional outpatient and inpatient areas within the hospital throughout 2026. This achievement builds on earlier developments, including a new theatre, recovery department, and two state-of-the-art Angio labs – all part of the same project.

The additional capacity created has been carefully planned and strategically aligned. In 2026, we will complete the final elements of this expansion, all designed to complement one another. This includes new outpatient consultation spaces on the ground floor, utilising the former Radiology department, consolidating outpatient services, and freeing up valuable space for inpatient care.

We will also redevelop the old Angio suite to accommodate a new 3T MRI scanner, replacing the temporary unit currently located at the front of the hospital. In addition, the opening of our Canary Wharf diagnostic centre will mark another exciting milestone, offering advanced diagnostic capabilities and strengthening collaboration with our colleagues at Bupa clinics and Bupa Dental.

2025 also marked an exciting chapter for Bupa Health Services with the addition of two new hospitals to our family: New Victoria Hospital in August and King Edward VII in November. It was fantastic to see so many New Victoria consultants join us at the Consultant Christmas Party, creating an opportunity for consultants from London Medical, Basinghall Clinic, Cromwell Hospital, and New Victoria to connect with colleagues and staff in a truly memorable event. This is just the beginning of many collaborations across our health services network, enabling us to offer patients even greater choice and access to exceptional care.

This year has brought many exciting milestones for our robotic surgery programme. We achieved several firsts with the Da Vinci SP system, including London’s first single-port colorectal surgery, and recently celebrated treating our 100th gynaecology patient using the SP. Innovation remains at the heart of everything we do as we continue to expand our capabilities in robotic surgery.

At this time of year, it’s important to recognise the incredible dedication of our teams across the hospital, who work tirelessly to deliver the highest standards of patient care. Their efforts have been rewarded with several prestigious accolades, including achieving the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) with a perfect score of five out of five – the highest rating possible. This award recognises cancer care environments that go above and beyond to create welcoming, supportive spaces for patients.

We are also proud of individual achievements within our team. Denia Balang, Gynaecology Clinical Nurse Specialist, was honoured with the BSGE Endometriosis Nurse Innovation Award during the BSGE Endometriosis CNS Study Day. Meanwhile, Sharon Jones, Clinical Nurse Specialist, received national recognition after winning at the Diabetes Nursing Awards 2025.

Finally, on behalf of the entire Executive Team, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all consultants for your continued commitment and dedication. We wish you a joyful, restful Christmas and New Year, and look forward to working together again in 2026.

Lexham Gardens opens

On Monday 2 December, we officially opened the hospital’s new Lexham Gardens expansion – a 33,000 sq ft space housing our Radiology and Therapies departments. This major development increases our capacity to treat patients, offering faster access to care and an enhanced experience throughout their treatment journey.

The expansion has doubled the size of our Therapies department, which now features an occupational therapy suite, a dedicated children’s therapy area with a sensory room, and a fully equipped rehabilitation gym. Our upgraded Radiology department has been purpose-built to deliver exceptional care, with the latest technology including new X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and DEXA equipment.

By investing in advanced, energy-efficient technologies, the new expansion will help reduce carbon emissions over time. The building itself has already achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating from BREEAM – the leading certification for sustainably built environments.

Consultant Christmas Party

On Tuesday 2 December, we were delighted to host our annual Consultant Summer Party at the prestigious 116 Pall Mall.

We heard from Philip Luce, Dr Sarah Frankton, and Dr Brian O'Connor, who shared exciting updates about Cromwell Hospital and developments across our wider network.

This event provided an excellent opportunity for consultants to reconnect with colleagues and engage with members of our Executive team and senior management in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. We were also thrilled to be joined by colleagues from New Victoria Hospital.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening such a success. We look forward to welcoming you to future events – and to seeing you again at the Consultant Summer Party 2026. Details will be shared next year.

Canary Wharf

We’re delighted to announce the upcoming launch of a brand-new Specialist Diagnostic and Dental Centre, opening Spring 2026 at 50 Bank Street, Canary Wharf. This marks a significant milestone in Bupa’s healthcare journey, bringing together primary care, secondary care, and dental services under one roof.

The launch follows a period of recent growth, including the acquisitions of London Medical, New Victoria Hospital, and King Edward VII’s Hospital, as well as the Lexham Gardens expansion.

The Centre will offer:

  • state-of-the-art diagnostics, including MRI, CT, X-ray, and mammography
  • streamlined referral pathways into Cromwell Hospital, New Victoria Hospital, and King Edward VII’s Hospital
  • dedicated treatment rooms and recovery space, equipped for patient sedation

Plus, a wide range of specialties including:

  • health assessments and private GP appointments
  • orthopaedics, pain medicine, and spinal care
  • cardiology, respiratory, and ENT
  • urology, breast care, and gynaecology
  • general and specialist dental services

We’ll be sharing more updates in the coming months on how the centre will support you and your patients. To find out more, please contact Rachel Williams, Head of Consultant Strategy, at [email protected].

Children's therapy service

At Cromwell Hospital, our children’s physiotherapy and occupational therapy service supports patients from birth to 18 years, offering expert assessment and treatment tailored to each child’s unique needs. Our paediatric specialists – Martina, Physiotherapist, and Isobel, Occupational Therapist – bring advanced skills and deep knowledge of child development and paediatric conditions.

We aim to help children achieve optimal physical outcomes through personalised programmes. Each child receives a comprehensive initial assessment, during which therapy goals are agreed. Families are supported with clear guidance to help them understand therapy needs and feel confident in promoting progress at home and in daily life.

A key service we offer is a developmental coordination disorder (DCD) assessment. DCD affects around 5% of children, yet many remain undiagnosed. Our team provides detailed assessments and tailored intervention plans based on each child’s strengths, challenges, and goals.

Therapy sessions are engaging and evidence-based, incorporating graded activities and parent coaching. We also work closely with schools to ensure children have the right strategies, adaptations, and support to participate fully in their learning environment.
