Cholecystectomy (Gallbladder removal surgery)
Cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the gallbladder. The surgery is done to remove the gallbladder due to gallstones which are either causing pain or an infection.
What does cholecystectomy involve?
The procedure is commonly done by keyhole (laparoscopic/robotic) surgery. The patient will be under general anaesthetic, and it usually takes between 1 to 2 hours.
During the keyhole surgery, the surgeon will make small incisions through which they can insert a small camera in order to be able to see inside your abdomen. Surgical tools are then inserted through the other incisions to remove the gallbladder.
Why choose Cromwell Hospital?
We have a team of experienced consultant general and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeons who have developed their skills and knowledge working in some of the leading NHS teaching hospitals in London.
Cromwell Hospital is one of the few hospitals in London to offer robotic cholecystectomy, which allows our HPB surgeons to remove gallbladders more precisely and with reduced complications. They also see more complex cases that surgeons in other hospitals will not operate on.
Our surgeons work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), which includes other consultants and experts from different specialties. They meet regularly to review complex cases to ensure the best possible care for each patient.
If you get in touch with us, we can offer a consultation to assess your case the next day. We also offer a rapid route through to surgery, so you can be seen, cared for and recover in the fastest time possible.
Who is suitable for cholecystectomy ?
Cholecystectomy is usually carried out in patients who suffer from painful gallstones. Gallstones don’t normally have symptoms associated with them. However, at times they may:
- block the flow of bile (leading to jaundice)
- irritate the gallbladder or the pancreas
Cholecystectomy is also performed for other reasons. These include gallbladder polyps, gallbladder cancer, or altered function (dyskinesia).
What is the recovery period?
The length of time it takes you to recover from the operation depends on a range of factors, including your age, other medical problems, fitness level, and the nature of the procedure. You will typically need one to two weeks off work.
Our dedicated recovery team of specialist nurses, dieticians, and physiotherapists will work with you closely after your operation to make sure you recover as quickly as possible.
