Microsurgical varicocele ligation
A microsurgical varicocele ligation is the gold standard procedure to remove/reduce the size of swollen veins around the testicles (varicocele). It helps restore a more balanced blood flow to the male reproductive organs (testes).

Who is suitable for microsurgical varicocele ligation?
This treatment is used to treat patients who suffer from swollen veins in the scrotum called varicoceles. These swollen veins can cause scrotal ache and pain, a change in the size of the testes, and/or a hormonal imbalance.
Varicoceles are commonly seen in men with low sperm counts and/or quality. These men often have difficulty conceiving (primary or secondary infertility).
What does it involve?
Microsurgical varicocele ligation is a procedure using a state-of-the-art microscope where a small incision is made in the groin on the affected side of the scrotum. It is performed under a general anaesthetic as a day case. The veins, once exposed, are dissected and tied off using microscopic vision whilst protecting the artery (using intra-operative doppler ultrasound).
Why choose Cromwell Hospital?
This procedure is only performed by highly skilled consultant urological surgeons with specialist microsurgery experience, who have developed their skills and knowledge working in some of the leading NHS teaching hospitals in London.
Our surgeons work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), which includes other consultants and experts from different specialties. They meet regularly to review complex cases to ensure the best possible care for each patient.
If you get in touch with us, we can offer a consultation to assess your case the next day. We also offer a rapid route through to surgery, so you can be seen, cared for and recover in the fastest time possible.
What is the recovery period?
The length of time it takes you to recover from the operation depends on a range of factors, including your age. Most patients can go home the same day as their procedure, though it may take a few weeks to heal fully.
Your surgeon will be able to advise you on the likely recovery period for you. However, it is recommended that you do not do any heavy lifting or running for 2 to 4 weeks after the operation. Our dedicated team of specialist nurses will work with you closely after your operation to make sure you recover as quickly as possible.
