Pulmonary rehabilitation

A pulmonary rehabilitation programme helps those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other chronic lung conditions to reduce breathlessness.

It combines education with exercise classes that will help you to better manage your condition.

If you have a chronic lung condition, you may avoid exercise for fear of breathlessness. Pulmonary rehabilitation can help you learn how to exercise safely and with confidence, improving your general fitness and ability to cope with your condition.

Why choose Cromwell Hospital for Pulmonary Rehabilitation programmes?

Our cardiothoracic physiotherapists are highly trained and fully up to date with the latest best practice, putting them at the leading edge of their profession.

Physiotherapy sessions are carried out in our purpose-built therapies gym, which is fully equipped with everything you will need, including a treadmill, step machine and exercise bikes.

Your pulmonary rehabilitation programme will be bespoke, and tailored to your own needs, and would include dietary advice as well as managed exercise.

What does pulmonary rehabilitation involve?

All programmes are bespoke, however a typical patient would have one or two sessions per week over a period of 6 to 12 weeks.

These can either be one-to-one with your therapist or you can join a group of other patients, according to your needs and preferences.

As a first step, we would make a full assessment of your breathing, as well as understanding any other health issues you have.

We monitor your progress closely throughout, fine tuning your programme as we go along. We also give you exercises to carry out at home as part of your day-to-day life.
