Mammography
We offer high-quality private mammography with results typically provided within 48 hours.
Our mammography service
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Finding it early gives the best chance for simpler and more successful treatment.
In England, the NHS invites women for routine breast screening every three years from age 50 to 71. Your first invitation usually arrives between 50 and 53.
At our mammography clinics across London, we offer mammograms to asymptomatic patients aged 40 and over who haven’t had a recent screening mammogram.
Some younger women choose to have private screening for peace of mind. This is because:
- Breast cancer can occur in younger women, with around 10 – 11% of breast cancers diagnosed under age 45.
- Screening can help spot changes long before they can be felt.
At Cromwell Hospital, Basinghall Clinic, and London Medical, we offer high-quality private mammography. Our experienced mammographers provide a comfortable and supportive experience. You’ll typically receive your results within 48 hours.
We also offer flexible payment options to make care accessible.
A mammogram is a low‑dose breast X‑ray of your breast tissue that helps identify changes that may need further investigation. The amount of radiation used is very low and the benefits of screening far outweigh the risks.
Dense tissue appears white on the image, while softer tissue appears darker, which helps specialists identify any unusual areas.
When you have had your first mammogram, this is seen as your baseline mammogram, any future mammograms will be reviewed and compared to previous mammograms by the radiologists.
Regular breast screening helps save lives, with national screening programmes estimated to prevent around 1,300 deaths each year in the UK.
- Breast questionnaire
Your appointment begins with the mammographer going through a questionnaire. They will:
- ask about any breast changes or symptoms
- ask about previous surgeries and problems checked
- check if you take any medication that could affect your mammogram images
This knowledge makes it easier for the radiologist to report your images.
- Your mammogram
A mammographer will take your images. During the imaging:
- Your breast is gently placed between two surfaces.
- You’ll feel some pressure for a few seconds.
- It may feel slightly uncomfortable, but most people say it’s quicker and easier than expected.
The images are reviewed by two consultant radiologists who generate a report. You can also request a copy if you wish.
Your results will be shared within 48 hours.
A full report is sent directly to your referring doctor once you have received your results. You can also request a copy from your referrer for your own records.
