Adenotonsillectomy
Adenotonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the adenoids and the tonsils at the same time.
What is adenotonsillectomy?
Adenotonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the adenoids and the tonsils at the same time. The adenoids and tonsils are bits of tissue called lymphoid tissue, located at the back of your nose (adenoids) or the sides of the throat (tonsils).
Adenoids and tonsils are an important part of the immune system, which help fight infection and protect the body from bacteria and viruses. Because they make up a small part of similar tissues around the head and neck, removing them has no impact on immunity and will not result in any long-term adverse outcomes.
Children who undergo this surgery can benefit from:
- reduced frequency and severity of throat infections
- improved sleep quality and breathing
- reduced choking and swallowing difficulties
- improved daytime energy, behaviour, and school performance
Your child might be recommended this procedure if:
- recurrent tonsilitis
- sleep disturbance and breathing problems
- choking and swallowing difficulties
- recurrent peritonsillar abscess (quinsy)
- tonsil symptoms that persist despite treatment, such as tonsil stones
Tonsillitis and enlarged tonsils are very common in childhood, particularly between the ages of three and eight. Most children improve with time and do not require surgery. However, for those who meet the clinical criteria, surgery can be very beneficial.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia (meaning your child will be asleep throughout). The procedure usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. Most children go home the same day, although some may stay overnight.
There are two different approaches to a tonsillectomy: traditional and coblation. The traditional approach has the benefit of removing all tonsil tissue without risk of regrowth. The coblation approach carries a small risk of regrowth but offers reduced pain and risk of bleeding during recovery. Your surgeon will recommend the approach they feel is most appropriate for your child.
During the procedure, the tonsils are removed through the mouth and the adenoids from behind the nose (accessed through the mouth). There will be no external cuts or scars.
Recovery typically takes around 10 to 14 days.
During this time, it is important to provide regular pain relief. Eating a normal diet (including solid food) and drinking frequent fluids helps healing. Your child should avoid strenuous activity for two weeks.
