Cromwell Hospital is delighted to announce that the International Centre for Endometriosis has renewed its status as an accredited British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) Endometriosis Centre for 2024. The centre was first awarded the accreditation in 2023.
The BSGE exists to improve standards, promote training, and encourage the exchange of information in minimal access surgery techniques for women with gynaecological problems. The BSGE has a set of requirements for accreditation, including having a dedicated consultant led service run within a specialist outpatient clinic, treating a minimum number of patients per year, and having an endometriosis specialist nurse and additional supporting clinicians form part of the centre.
The BSGE’s accreditation was created to enhance the delivery of care for people suffering from severe endometriosis.
In the UK, endometriosis affects one in 10 women or those assigned female at birth and many struggle to get a diagnosis. Recent research shows that there is currently an average of 7.5 years between first seeing a doctor about their symptoms and receiving a diagnosis. The condition can have a significant impact on someone’s life causing chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, bowel problems, difficulties with conceiving, fatigue and depression.
Our International Centre for Endometriosis, which is led by Mr Amer Raza, Consultant Gynaecologist at Cromwell Hospital, was set up after seeing the obvious gap in care for those struggling to get a diagnosis and treatment for the condition.
Patients can be referred to the centre through their GP, their insurance company or on a self-referral and self-pay basis.
Mr Raza said; “We set up the International Centre for Endometriosis to give patients rapid access to assessments, examinations, treatment, whether surgical or medical, and an ongoing plan to help manage the condition all under one roof. I’m proud that the centre has received recognition from the BSGE for our continued work to support patients and provide them with the best possible care for this condition.”
The centre is supported by a range of specialists including Mr Amer Raza, Consultant Gynaecologist; Mr Hama Attar, Consultant Urological Surgeon; and Mr Valerio Celentano, Consultant General Surgeon.
