Gynaecology diagnostic pathway

What to expect

You may be recommended one, or more, of the following diagnostic tests. None of the tests require the use of general anaesthesia, so you will be able to go home immediately afterwards. 

Ultrasound

An ultrasound scan uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of organs inside the body. Depending on your symptoms, your gynaecologist may recommend an external or internal ultrasound.

An abdominal ultrasound is carried out externally. A small hand-held device (transducer or wand) is held against your skin and moved slowly over the area that is being examined to get the best images.

A transvaginal ultrasound is when a small, slim probe is placed in the vagina and gently moved around to examine uterus (womb) and ovaries. This technique produces a more detailed image, which can help aid diagnosis.  

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a procedure used to examine the cervix (opening of the womb) for abnormal cells using a special microscope. Dyes may be applied to the cervix to help your consultant see the abnormal cells. You may also have a small sample of cells removed (biopsy) and sent to the lab for testing. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area beforehand. 

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus using a special telescope and camera. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area beforehand. Depending on what is seen during the procedure, your consultant may need to take a biopsy.

If, during your telephone triage, the nurse thinks a hysteroscopy may be required on the day, you will be advised to take over the counter painkillers prior to your appointment to reduce the chance of discomfort.
