Kidney transplant

A kidney transplant is the preferred treatment for end stage kidney disease (ESKD). It involves replacing failed kidneys with a healthy one from a living or deceased donor. It offers increased life expectancy, better health, and freedom from the confines of dialysis-dependency.

About kidney transplants

Kidney transplants are carried out in patients suffering with advanced chronic kidney disease whose kidneys no longer work adequately. A kidney transplant can help restore quality of life for these individuals.

Kidneys are vital organs which clean the blood and remove waste products and excess fluid from the bloodstream. If you have advanced kidney disease, these waste products can build up to toxic levels and cause you to become ill.

A kidney transplant doesn’t have to be daunting. At Cromwell Hospital, our consultant nephrologists and dedicated renal team are with you every step of the way, from initial consultation to transplant surgery and aftercare. Our private kidney specialists in London provide comprehensive care, including private kidney cancer treatment and other kidney care services.

Why choose us for your kidney transplant?

A kidney transplant is suitable for:

  • people with advancing, chronic kidney disease (known as stage 4 or 5), or
  • people with end-stage kidney disease who are already dependent on dialysis

A ‘pre-emptive’ transplant (done before dialysis is needed) often results in the best outcomes.

Yes – we offer living donor* kidney transplantation at Cromwell Hospital. This means that the recipient will have to provide a suitable donor. This is usually a relative or, occasionally, a close friend.

Prior to transplantation, both donor and recipient will be assessed through various tests to make sure that it is safe for the surgery to take place.

*Deceased donor transplantation can only be accessed via the NHS (if you are a UK citizen) or your own national transplant waiting list (if your main residence is abroad).
