About our varicose veins clinic

We offer next day appointments with our expert consultants, to give you peace of mind and rapid access to treatments. You can expect same day diagnostics, led by our consultants, who will then provide a personalised treatment plan.

Varicose veins can cause complications, so it is important to see a specialist who can provide expert advice and support. Early intervention lowers the risks associated with varicose veins.

We provide a comprehensive consultant-led diagnostic and treatment service for varicose veins.

If your varicose veins are causing pain or discomfort, it is important to see a vascular specialist to avoid your condition worsening.

The symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Swollen and enlarged veins, that may appear blue or dark purple, and are often lumpy, bulging or twisted
  • Aching or uncomfortable legs
  • Swollen feet or ankles
  • Burning or throbbing
  • Muscle cramp, particularly at night
  • Dry, itchy, and thin skin over the vein
  • Ulceration of the skin (if varicose veins are severe).

You have a greater chance of developing varicose veins if:

  • You are female
  • You are over 50 years old
  • You are overweight
  • You are pregnant
  • You have a close relative with varicose veins
  • You stand for long periods (such as at work)
  • You have a history of previous deep vein thrombosis or other venous problems.

Your consultant will meet with you to discuss your symptoms and medical history. They will assess the appearance of your varicose veins and may also feel your legs for any swelling.

If your varicose veins are causing you pain or discomfort, you may need to have a Doppler ultrasound scan. A Doppler ultrasound is used to assess the blood flow within your legs.

Varicose veins treatment

Your consultant will meet with you to review your symptoms and do a diagnostic scan. They will then discuss the best treatment options for you.

All treatments are delivered by a consultant and may include:

  • Endovenous ablation - Performed under local anaesthetic, an endovenous ablation involves inserting a catheter into the affected vein and using heat to seal it.
  • Sclerotherapy - Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure where a fine needle is used to deliver a solution into the affected veins, that causes them to become near invisible.
  • Lifestyle changes - To prevent varicose veins from worsening, you may be recommended to wear compression stockings, to undertake regular exercise, or to elevate the affected leg(s).
