Anterior discectomy, decompression, and fusion
An anterior discectomy, decompression, and fusion is a procedure designed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerves, relieve pain, and to stabilise the spine.
What does an anterior discectomy, decompression and fusion involve?
An anterior discectomy is usually performed from the front of the body. You will be placed under general anaesthetic, and your surgeon will make an incision in the lower front of your neck. They will then remove disc, excess bone, and soft tissue which are causing compression. Once removed, the adjoining vertebrae are fused together usually using an implant. Over the following 9 to 12 months, the bones on either side knit together forming a fusion.
An anterior discectomy with fusion is usually advised for patients with a herniated disk or bone spur that is causing pain and pressure on nerve roots and/or spinal cord. Patients often experience pain, especially in the legs, which is worse when standing or walking. Unless there is a weakness, it is often reserved until after non-surgical measures such as physiotherapy, pain management, and injections have been exhausted.
For the first two weeks, you will be advised to take things gently but stay active. Once the wound has healed, you can gradually build up your strength between weeks 2 and 6. Many people are able to start commuting back to work around 4 weeks, and by 3 months can return to non‑impact sports. Because the breastbone needs time to fully heal, impact activities may need to be delayed for up to a year, and in some cases avoided altogether.
