Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
A coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is a surgical procedure for people with atherosclerosis (coronary heart disease).
Who is suitable for coronary artery bypass graft?
Your cardiologist and cardiac surgeon may recommend a coronary artery bypass graft:
- if you have angina which cannot be treated by medication
- if you are at risk of developing a blood clot
- to increase your life span and improve symptoms
Severe angina and blood clots can both trigger a heart attack.

What does a coronary artery bypass graft involve?
The procedure will be carried out under general anaesthetic, so you’ll be unconscious and won’t feel anything. The operation usually takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on the number of grafts required.
To perform a coronary artery bypass graft, blood vessels (usually from the chest wall, such as the mammary arteries) are taken and then connected to the heart coronary vessels below the blockages.
At Cromwell Hospital, we offer total arterial revascularisation using internal mammary artery and radial artery (from your arms), avoiding any leg incisions.
Alternatively, your consultant will use leg veins or arteries from the arms to create a new blood vessel (graft), which is placed between the aorta and the coronary artery below the narrowed area or blockage.
What is the recovery period?
After the procedure, you’ll need to stay in hospital for an average of 5 to 7 days. Patients who undergo total arterial CABG recover quicker as there are no leg incisions, which aids mobility and recovery.
It may take up to 12 weeks before you are fully recovered, therefore you should gradually return to your normal activities. After 4 to 6 weeks, you should be able to drive and go back to work. Your specialist will advise if there are any activities you should avoid.
