High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) of the prostate is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses high-frequency ultrasound to heat and destroy cancer cells in the prostate.

What is HIFU?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is most commonly used to focally treat patients with localised prostate cancer. This is called focal therapy.

Prostate cancer is often contained to only one part of the prostate and, for these patients, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can be used to target only the cancerous areas, leaving behind healthy prostate tissue. This treatment helps preserve urinary function and sexual function compared to other prostate cancer treatments.

HIFU is carried out under a general anaesthetic, with most procedures taking around one to two hours. Your surgeon will place an ultrasound probe into your bottom to view the cancer and precisely target the cancerous area with the high-intensity ultrasound.

Ahead of your operation, it helps if you can stay active and do gentle exercise. This will help you cope with the operation and build strength afterwards. It may also be beneficial to start some pelvic floor exercises.

Your consultant will advise you of any specific instructions ahead of your procedure.

You will typically recover within a few days. The procedure is often done as a day case; if it is done in the morning or early afternoon, you can go home the same day. If it is done in the late afternoon or early evening, then you will need to stay overnight.  You will be sent home with a catheter, which is removed approximately seven days later.

Most men experience little pain; however, some discomfort can develop after a few days, which can be helped with simple painkillers. Laxatives will also be given to keep the stools soft. There will be very little restriction daily activities, and the only restriction will be no heavy exercise for four weeks. Many patients can go back to work quickly, particularly if they do not have a particularly manual job.

Our dedicated urology specialist nurse will work with you closely after your operation to make sure you recover as quickly as possible.
