What is a robotic hysterectomy?
A total abdominal hysterectomy is an operation to remove your womb and cervix through a surgical incision in your tummy (or lower abdomen).
Our consultants are able to use the latest robotic-assisted, keyhole surgery to carry out this procedure, which results in less scarring, less bleeding, less trauma, lesser pain after surgery, and a shorter recovery time.
Your gynaecologist may recommend a hysterectomy as a treatment for various conditions affecting the reproductive system, usually where other treatments have not worked. These conditions include:
- fibroids – non-cancerous growths of muscle and fibrous tissue in your womb
- endometriosis
- painful or heavy periods that have not been controlled by other treatments
- cancer – such as womb cancer, cervical cancer, or ovarian cancer
After a hysterectomy you’ll no longer have periods. As the procedure is irreversible, your consultant will discuss your treatment options with you, giving you plenty of time to think about what is best for you.
One advantage of a total hysterectomy over a subtotal hysterectomy (which only removes the womb) is that by also removing the cervix, you remove any risk of developing cervical cancer at a later date.
A robotic hysterectomy usually takes an hour. During the operation, you will be under general anaesthetic.
Your surgeon will use the da Vinci Xi surgical robot – a pair of highly advanced robotic arms – to assist. In the operating theatre, your surgeon will operate the robotic arms using a console. These arms hold a camera and surgical equipment, and enable the surgeon to make very precise movements in the body.
Your surgeon makes small incisions in your tummy. They then use a laparoscope – a thin telescopic instrument with a light – to investigate and treat your condition. Robotic arms are inserted through these small holes and connected with consoles. The surgeon then uses his hands to control the arms and carries out the operation very precisely.
The surgeon will remove your womb and cervix. They may also need to remove your fallopian tubes and ovaries – this will be discussed with you prior to surgery.
The advantage of robotic-assisted hysterectomy is that it enables your surgeon to carry out this complex procedure with great precision. This causes less scarring and less pain, meaning you will recover quicker.
After the procedure, you will need to rest in hospital for a night. When you are ready to go home, your consultant or specialist nurse will let you know how to manage your recovery.
You may feel pain and discomfort in your abdomen for a few days after the operation and will probably experience some bleeding and discharge for a few weeks.
Typically, it takes between four to six weeks to recover fully and to return to your normal activities, including work.
Ahead of your operation, it helps to be as fit and healthy as possible. This will help you cope with the operation and recover strength afterwards.
