Subtotal abdominal hysterectomy
A subtotal abdominal hysterectomy is an operation to remove your womb, leaving your cervix in place. The operation involves an incision in your tummy (or lower abdomen). This procedure can be used to treat a range of medical conditions, including non-cancerous tumours, and painful or heavy periods.
Who is suitable for a subtotal abdominal hysterectomy?
Your gynaecologist may recommend a hysterectomy as a treatment for various conditions affecting your reproductive system, usually where other treatments have not worked. These conditions include:
- fibroids – non-cancerous growths of muscle and fibrous tissue in your womb
- heavy or painful periods that have not been controlled by other treatments.
Depending on your medical condition, you may prefer a subtotal abdominal hysterectomy (over a total hysterectomy) to keep as much of your reproductive system as possible, including your cervix.
After a hysterectomy you’ll no longer have periods. As the procedure is irreversible, your consultant will discuss your treatment options with you, giving you plenty of time to think about what is best for you.
What does a subtotal abdominal hysterectomy involve?
A subtotal abdominal hysterectomy usually takes an hour. During the operation, you will be under general anaesthetic. Your gynaecologist will make a precise incision across your lower abdomen, either horizontally along your bikini line, or vertically from your tummy button to your bikini line. They will then remove your womb, leaving your cervix in place.
What is the recovery period?
A subtotal abdominal hysterectomy is a major operation. You will need to be cared for in hospital for up to four nights. When you are ready to go home, your consultant or specialist nurse will let you know how to manage your recovery. You may feel pain and discomfort in your abdomen for a few days after the operation, and will probably experience some bleeding and discharge for a few weeks. Typically, it can take between six to eight weeks before you can return to your normal activities, including work.

All of our Fixed Price Packages include pre-admission tests, procedure, professional fees, post-op outpatient care and any other consultant-recommended services as part of your treatment.

Hospital package from £8,370 (four nights)
Indicative consultant fees from £1,200-£1,500
- Standard pre-admission tests, including electrocardiogram (ECG) and chest X-ray
- Accommodation in a private en-suite room for up to five nights
- All meals
- Ward medications and dressings
- Theatre procedure and anesthetics
- Inpatient physiotherapy, if needed, and surgical stockings
- Post-op and discharge medication
- Consultant consultation fee
- Consultant procedure fee
- Anaesthetist fee
- Non-standard diagnostic and histology tests
- Any additional costs not specified in the package inclusions
Included in the package price:
- Consultant Surgeon and Consultant Anaesthetist procedure fees.
- Two follow-up consultations with consultant within post-op timeframe
- Pre-admission outpatient tests, which includes standard pathology and diagnostic tests (ECG & Chest X-ray), if required.
- Recovery and accommodation which includes a night stay in HDU and further nights in a private en-suite room.
- Ward medications, dressings, and nursing consumables.
- Theatre Procedure, including anaesthetic drugs and theatre consumables.
- Pathology, blood products and histology, if required.
- Standard post–op medication issued and used during the inpatient stay.
- Inpatient physiotherapy and surgical stockings, if required.
- Discharge medication pertaining to the condition being treated by this package.
- All patient meals and non-alcoholic beverages.
- Post- op X-rays and physiotherapy pertaining to the procedure within six weeks.
- Return to theatres within six weeks of the procedure date due to complication.
Excluded from the package price:
- Take out supplies.
- Companion beds and catering for relatives / visitors.
- Personal expenses – telephone calls, additional catering, ambulances, etc…
If additional night’s stay, diagnostics, or other services are requested from your consultant you will not be charged in addition for these as these are included within the fixed price package.
