What does your role as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon involve?

My role as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon involves making my patients feel safe and supported throughout the cardiac pathway, from first consultation through to post-operative care, utilising the support of the multidisciplinary team (MDT). My role requires me to perform complex cardiac surgery in a safe and responsible manner, so that my patients can experience the best results post-op.

What is the key assessment for chest pain?

When a patient comes for a consultation regarding chest pain symptoms, there are many factors to consider when making a diagnosis. Firstly, I will discuss with the patient their history of the chest pain, the type of chest pain which they are experiencing, and their risk factors for cardiac pain.

In order to reach a diagnosis, we will carry out some tests on the patient. These can vary from blood tests; echocardiogram (a non-invasive test using sound waves to image and record the heart); exercise stress test (which provides continuous monitoring of your symptoms, heart rhythm, and blood pressure); or an electrocardiogram (a routine investigation which records the electrical activity of your heart).

What attracted you to specialising in cardiac surgery?

Since I was a child, I was always interested in cardiac surgery. I enjoyed learning about the anatomy and physiology of the body especially the heart, and now my job allows me to see this in real time.

What does a day in your life look like?

There is no typical day for me as everyday is different. Some days can be long operating days, starting at 7am and finishing in the evening, while other days could be more clinic-based and involve a lot of meetings. Occasionally, I will also be teaching and educating future healthcare professionals.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most about my role is the variety of operations which I perform, helping my patients to live a better life through surgery and supporting the patient throughout their cardiac pathway with the help of my amazing multi disciplinary team.

What do you like to do outside of work?

When I am not working, I enjoy keeping fit through sports such as football and cricket. I also enjoy travelling around the world with my family and experiencing new cultures.
