Endocrine care

Our experienced team of endocrinologists and endocrine surgeons are specialists in the treatment of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal conditions, including hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer. Our diabetologists are at the cutting edge of diabetic care and weight loss therapies.

About endocrinology

Endocrinology is the field of medicine that relates to hormone related disease. Endocrine conditions can be complex, often requiring specialist tests and diagnostic investigations to make a diagnosis. Our specialised endocrinology team work closely with colleagues across the hospital to diagnose and treat a wide range of endocrine conditions.

We treat patients with all endocrine conditions including diabetes, disease of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, adrenal disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Our endocrine unit is well-established and has been treating patients for over 25 years.

The team includes consultant endocrinologists, consultant endocrine surgeons and diabetes experts who are leaders in their fields. They are supported by specialist nurses and dietitians.

Our endocrine multidisciplinary team is chaired by Prof Fausto Palazzo, Consultant Endocrine Surgeon and it meets regularly to discuss complex cases in open forum in order to provide the best clinical decisions and treatment to our patients.

Endocrine surgery

Endocrine surgery is the surgical arm of endocrinology. Our endocrine surgeons work within a multi-disciplinary team of specialists to provide the best possible service for the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease. The extended team, in addition to endocrinologists, includes specialist radiologists, anaesthetists and pathologists. The surgeons apply the state of the art techniques with nerve monitoring, intraoperative PTH. Laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic adrenal surgical techniques are routinely used.

Related endocrine conditions

Our private endocrinologists can treat patients with a range of endocrine conditions, including:

The thyroid gland, in the neck, produces a vital hormone called thyroxine. The gland may be overactive, underactive, form nodules (abnormal tissue) or enlarge to cause a swelling in the neck (goitre).

Goitre >

Thyroid cancer >

The parathyroid gland (also found in the neck) produces the parathyroid hormone (PTH). If too much of this hormone is released, it can cause problems with tiredness, abdominal pain and pancreatitis.

Hyperparathyroidism >

The adrenal glands are small glands, found at the top of the kidneys, that produce adrenaline and cortisol. If you have an adrenal gland disorder, the glands may not be making the correct amount of these hormones, causing nodules or tumours.

The pancreas is a small organ, found behind the stomach and below the ribcage, which produces the hormone insulin.

The parotid and submandibular glands make up the salivary glands found in front of and below each ear. Lumps can develop, causing discomfort for patients.
