Weight management centre
Our weight management service provides help and support to people who are dealing with excess weight.
About our weight management centre
Weight loss works differently for each person and can be achieved through a number of different methods, including dietary and lifestyle changes, appropriate medication and bariatric (weight-loss) surgery.
Through the weight management team, you will have access to a wide variety of therapies and support services, all under one roof.
What does weight management involve?
We offer a full physical and mental health assessment to explore not only your weight but other issues which may be related.
The team will explore with you, the best options to reduce excess weight, maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI) and to support your level of morale.
You will be supported by the team throughout the programme. In addition to their individual areas of expertise, they have access to additional services including:
- a personal trainer
- a dietician
- complementary therapies including massage or acupuncture
- pulmonary rehabilitation for those who are experiencing breathlessness.
Programmes
We offer a range of tailor-made programmes:
Lifestyle clinic
This clinic is for those looking to lose up to 10% of their current weight.
It involves a minimum six month commitment to a hospital-based programme run by a specialist bariatric dietitian.
Drug treatment
Drug treatment is generally suitable for those who have a BMI over 30 with no other medical conditions, or those who have a BMI greater than 27 and one or more medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.
Our team of experienced metabolic physician can advise you on whether drug treatment would be a suitable option.
Bariatric surgery
This type of surgery is used treat patients who are dangerously overweight.
There are several different types of weight loss surgery, all of which are available at Cromwell Hospital.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
An endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is an innovative non-surgical procedure performed with the aid of an endoscopic suturing device to reduce the size of the stomach to help patients to lose weight.
Gastric Balloon
The Allurion Balloon is the first gastric balloon that is swallowed, requiring no surgery, endoscopy, or anaesthesia. A non-invasive method to lose weight, with support provided by a consultant bariatric surgeon and specialist dietician.
Orbera gastric balloon
The Orbera gastric balloon is one of the most widely used non-surgical approaches for helping people to lose weight.
The gastric balloon is passed through your throat and placed in your stomach during a quick, non-surgical procedure – meaning no incisions, stitches or scars.
