Diagnostic tests for cardiothoracic conditions
Invasive diagnostic tests are delivered by our highly trained team of cardiothoracic surgeons at our world-class hospital in South Kensington, London.
About our diagnostic tests
Most diagnostic tests for heart and lung conditions are non- or minimally invasive. These are carried out within our cardiology and respiratory medicine departments.
Occasionally, patients may need to undergo more invasive tests that are carried out surgically. Invasive diagnostic tests are delivered by our highly trained team of cardiothoracic surgeons at our world-class hospital in South Kensington, London.
Surgical diagnostic tests
Tests performed within the cardiothoracic surgery department may require the use of general anaesthesia (meaning you’ll be asleep for your procedure).
Bronchoscopy
A bronchoscopy uses a long, thin tube with a camera (a bronchoscope) to visualise your lungs and airways.
Biopsy
A biopsy is when a small piece of tissue is taken for sampling, usually in cases where cancer is suspected.
Mediastinoscopy
A mediastinoscopy involves using a long, thin tube with a camera to examine your mediastinum.
Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a surgical technique that uses a tiny camera to diagnose and treat conditions in the thoracic cavity.
