He performs a variety of interventional procedures including coronary angioplasty (stent insertion), transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), MitraClip implantation and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, amongst many others.
Dr Costopoulos graduated from the University of Cambridge with distinction after successfully completing an MA MB MBChir in medicine in 2006. Following this, Dr Costopoulos undertook his core medical training in Cambridge, Oxford and London. He did his general cardiology training in the North West London area and, specifically, Hammersmith Hospital, London, which later led to the position of chief interventional fellow. Dr Costopoulos' medical journey continued in Milan, Italy where he was awarded a year’s fellowship at one of the best European cardiology centres, San Raffaele Scientific Institute (2012 to 2013). Following this, he received the highly competitive British Heart Foundation grant to complete a PhD at the University of Cambridge; this focused on the role of biomechanical forces in coronary atherosclerosis and won him the Young Investigator of the Year award, in this field. This led to a British Heart Foundation Clinical Lectureship during which he pursued both his academic and clinical interests prior to his appointment as a consultant at the Royal Papworth Hospital.
His research has been published in highly esteemed cardiology journals (including the European Heart Journal and Journals of the American College of Cardiology), for which he has been first author on over 50 papers.
