Mastectomy
A mastectomy is an operation to remove a breast, and is an effective treatment for breast cancer.
What is a mastectomy?
A mastectomy is an operation to remove breast tissue. It is most commonly performed as part of treatment for breast cancer, or sometimes to significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer in people at very high risk.
There are several types of mastectomy. Your surgical team will discuss which option is most appropriate for you.
Types of mastectomy
Your surgeon will explain which type is recommended for you. Options may include:
- total (simple) mastectomy – removal of all breast tissue
- skin-sparing mastectomy – breast tissue removed but most skin preserved
- nipple-sparing mastectomy – breast tissue removed while preserving the nipple and areola (not suitable for everyone)
- risk-reducing (prophylactic) mastectomy – performed to lower future cancer risk
Mastectomy may be done on one breast (unilateral) or both breasts (bilateral).
Breast reconstruction
Many people choose to have breast reconstruction, either at the same time as their mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction).
Reconstruction can use implants or your own tissue. Reconstruction is optional, and choosing not to have reconstruction is equally valid.
Why choose us for breast cancer care?
Expert consultants
Your care will be led by an expert breast consultant and supported by a dedicated breast care nurse specialist, with female consultants and radiographers available if preferred.
Multidisciplinary care
Our multidisciplinary team (MDT), which includes breast surgeons, nurses, oncologists, and physiotherapists, will design a treatment and recovery plan specifically tailored for you.
Leading-edge treatments
We utilise the latest medical technology to ensure the best treatment outcomes, including access to Europe’s most advanced oncology pathway and genetic testing.
Holistic care
We provide a wide range of supportive services through our Holistic Care Clinic, including counselling, physiotherapy, and a prosthesis, wig, and bra-fitting service.
A mastectomy may be advised if:
- your breast cancer involves a large area of the breast
- there are multiple areas of cancer in the breast
- radiotherapy is not suitable or has already been given
- you prefer mastectomy over breast-conserving surgery
- you have a high genetic risk of breast cancer (e.g. BRCA gene mutation)
Every decision is individual and made together with you, based on medical factors and personal preference.
Before surgery, you will:
- meet your surgical and anaesthetic teams
- have pre-operative assessments and scans if needed
- discuss reconstruction options, if relevant
- be given guidance about fasting, medications, and recovery
You will have time to ask questions and consider your options.
Ahead of your operation, your breast consultant will discuss your treatment options, the advantages and disadvantages of a radical mastectomy, and your options for breast reconstruction.
They will also talk to you about your recovery, and the possible physical and emotional effects of this type of surgery.
Emotional wellbeing
A mastectomy can have a significant emotional impact, affecting body image, confidence, and wellbeing. Support is available, including breast care nurses, counselling or psychological support, and peer support groups.
We also have a dedicated holistic care clinic for people with cancer.
All surgery carries risks. Possible side effects include:
- pain or numbness around the chest or arm
- infection or bleeding
- scar formation
- seroma (fluid collection)
- changes in sensation
Your surgeon will explain these in detail and how risks are minimised.
