About liver medicine
The liver is the largest solid organ in the body and plays a vital role in keeping you healthy. When the liver doesn’t work properly, it can affect your ability to filter out toxins, break down fat and make vital proteins.
Hepatology is a branch of medicine concerning the study and management of conditions that affect the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas.
At Cromwell Hospital, we have a team of highly experienced hepatologists and hepatobiliary surgeons that provide world-leading care and advanced treatments for conditions including liver cancer, liver disease and other complex illnesses.
Our expert liver team
The liver medicine unit within our Liver and Renal Centre is staffed by our team of consultant hepatologists, hepatobiliary surgeons and other supporting healthcare professionals.
At Cromwell Hospital, we pride ourselves on our multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Our multidisciplinary team (MDT) meets regularly and involves a diverse network of medical specialists, including hepatologists, oncologists, surgeons and more.
Together, our specialists devise unique, tailored treatment plans for each patient, allowing them to receive the best, most informed care possible.
Liver conditions we treat
'Liver disease’ is an umbrella term for a wide variety of conditions that affect the function of the liver. This includes conditions such as alcohol-related liver disease, hepatitis, lesions and cirrhosis.
Alongside our Integrated Cancer Campus, we also treat various cancers, including those of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas.
Diagnostic services for liver conditions
Assessing a suspected liver condition begins with having a consultation and undergoing diagnostic tests at our private hospital in west London. For our patients’ convenience, all the required tests are performed on the same day, under one roof.
Tests that you may receive include liver function tests (LFTs), liver elastography, and scans including MRI, CT and ultrasound.
Treatment for liver conditions
At the Liver and Renal Centre, we pride ourselves on offering the very latest and most advanced treatments for patients with liver conditions, including private liver transplants.
We are one of the only hospitals in London to offer treatment using the MR Linac – a powerful MRI scanner and linear accelerator that locates and destroys difficult-to-treat tumours. We also offer selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), a type of internal radiotherapy used to treat tumours that cannot be treated through other means.
