Liver conditions we treat
At the Liver and Renal Centre, our consultant hepatologists treat a wide scope of conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree and pancreas.

What is liver disease?
Liver disease is an umbrella term that refers to different conditions affecting the liver. This includes conditions like hepatitis, haemochromatosis, biliary tree conditions, and fatty liver disease.
There are several known risk factors for developing liver disease, including being overweight, having an untreated hepatitis infection, and alcohol misuse. Many liver diseases only show symptoms once cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver has already occurred.
Liver conditions we treat
The Liver and Renal Centre at Cromwell Hospital has the knowledge and resources to treat patients with complex liver conditions, such as chronic pancreatitis or biliary tree diseases.
Bile duct cancer
Cholangiocarcinoma, often known as bile duct cancer, is when abnormal cells develop within the bile ducts.
Gallbladder cancer
Gallbladder cancer is a type of cancer that occurs within the gallbladder, a small organ located under the liver.
Gallstones
Gallstones are small stones made from excess cholesterol that develop within the gallbladder.
Hepatitis
Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver. There are different types, such as viral hepatitis or hepatitis caused by excessive alcohol consumption.
Liver cancer
Primary liver cancer originates in the liver – the most common type is called hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Liver cirrhosis
Cirrhosis is the scarring of the liver, often as a result of long-term liver damage. This scar tissue prevents normal liver function.
Liver disease
Liver disease is a general term that refers to any condition affecting the normal, healthy function of the liver.
Liver lesions
Liver lesions are abnormal growths in the liver tissue. These growths may be cancerous or non-cancerous (benign).
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. It can be experienced as either an acute episode or a chronic condition.
Pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer develops within the cells that line the ducts of the pancreas, a glandular organ that produces digestive juices.
Pancreatic lesions
Cystic pancreatic lesions are sac-like pockets of fluid that develop on or inside the pancreas.
Polycystic liver disease
Polycystic liver disease (PLD) is a rare, genetic condition that causes cysts to grow within the liver.
Primary biliary cholangitis
Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a type of liver disease where the small bile ducts become inflamed and scarred.
Primary sclerosing cholangitis
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a type of liver disease where the large bile ducts become inflamed and scarred.
