Our expert surgical team
At the Heart and Lung Centre, our team of surgeons and clinical experts deliver world-class cardiothoracic surgery and comprehensive follow-up care.

Our multidisciplinary approach
Although each patient will receive a lead consultant to guide them throughout treatment, they’ll also benefit from our multidisciplinary approach to care.
Our multidisciplinary team (MDT) – consisting of surgeons, cardiologists, clinical nurse specialists and other experts – meets regularly to discuss patient cases and share collective knowledge, ensuring that patients are receiving the best, most informed treatment plans possible.
Our cardiothoracic surgeons
We are home to some of the UK’s most sought-after cardiothoracic surgeons, who have trained at top teaching hospitals across the country. Some surgeons are specialised in either cardiac surgery or thoracic surgery, while many perform both types.
Collectively, our surgeons hold a wealth of knowledge and experience in their field, so you can rest assured that you're in excellent hands.
Our supporting team
Our dedicated clinical staff support patients throughout their journey with us, from initial consultation through to surgery and aftercare.
Clinical nurse specialists (CNS)
Clinical nurse specialists (CNS) are nurses who have specialised in a certain field of medicine. Our CNSs are experts in both cardiology and respiratory medicine.
Cardiothoracic anaesthetists
Our specialist anaesthetists have completed extensive training in administering anaesthesia and monitoring patients during high-risk cardiothoracic surgeries.
Perfusionists
A perfusionist is a highly trained healthcare professional that operates the cardiopulmonary bypass (heart-lung) machine during surgery.
ICU team
Our dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) team provide one-to-one nursing for high-risk patients requiring constant monitoring.
Cardiothoracic physiotherapists
For patients requiring cardiothoracic rehabilitation, our physiotherapists run several programmes aimed at restoring patients' health post-surgery.
Dietitans
Our dietitians play an important role in patient rehabilitation and recovery by providing bespoke dietary and lifestyle advice.
